Just like people wanted to make Michele Obama's college writings a reason to discredit Barack Obama, it now happens that the college thesis of VA GOP Gubernatorial candidate Robert F. McDonnell are now shining a rather bright light on this candidate's dark mind.

Excerpts:

- Democrats assailed him in e-mail blasts and interviews for what he wrote about working women, homosexuals and "fornicators," and McDonnell tried to explain his views to crucial moderate and female voters.

- In the thesis, "The Republican Party's Vision for the Family: The Compelling Issue of The Decade," McDonnell described working women as "detrimental" to the traditional family. He criticized a U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing contraception for unmarried couples and decried the "purging" of religion from schools. He advocated character education programs in public schools to teach "traditional Judeo-Christian values," and he criticized federal tax credits for child care expenditures because they encouraged women to enter the workforce.

There you have it, the GOP game plan as written ~25 years ago by "genius" thinkers Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson: gays are evil, women belong at home not the workplace, only married folks should have access to contraceptives, and public schools should teach religion. Swell, America as theocracy. They tried. NEVER happened. NOT going to happen. Now this bozo McDonnell is backpedalling like hell to try and limit the damage. IMO, he's toast.

I've heard that before he died in early 2008, Jerry Falwell voiced sadness about what he unleashed on America by jamming religion into politics and how it has run amok. No kidding Jerry. Hope you like HELL.

Some men cannot tolerate free women. They require all women to be slaves of their father's, brother's and husband's. They must use the law to enforce their superiority.

What a bunch of fear riddled wimps. I didn't realize respect could go negative.

Im getting pretty sick and tired of the endless hypocrisy from the GOP. How stupid do
they think everyone else is outside of their mindless base? They may fool the idiots
from the right wing, but thats a given. They bring up statements made 20 years earlier
in the sotomayor confirmation and vote against her because of those comments, but
this man is not held to the same standard?

They were all for war in Iraq, but now that the war is in the country where Al quaida
actually is, they all want to "end the senseless war"...

They hate medic aide/medicare and social security, but now that the issue is about
health care reform they don't want anyone touching it.

9/11 happened on Bush / Cheneys watch, yet all they talk about is how "safe" they have kept
the country the last 8 years.

Birth certificates, death panels, socialism and all the other words of the day that they throw
around, with no facts to back it up.

It really is quite appalling to listen to them these days...

Indeed so! Ruth Marcus, in today's WaPo refers to McDonnell's situation as his Macaca Moment.

Marcus wrote a splendid piece on how ironic it is that he's now disavowing his posted thesis for how to rule the nation from the throne of evangelical fundamentalism. At the age of 34, the guy was no kid when he wrote that stuff 20 years ago in the heady early days of the Moral Majority and Falwell's smarmy smirking about AIDS being God's punishment for homosexuals. In his thesis, McDonnell wanted homosexuality to be made a crime punishable with jail time. I'm sure out of the other side of his mouth came the words "our God is a forgiving God." Now this clown wants to be Governor of VA? Hah! He's dead meat. Losing is God's punishment for GOP hypocrites and liars.

This fool of a candidate is living an amazing irony of having his words come back to haunt him. After he wrote about the detrimental effects to the family from letting women into the workplace, his own daughters went through college to earn masters degrees and serve with the Armed Forces in Iraq. I guess his daughters are more man than he is....

Go ahead, enjoy all of Marcus' delicious column in today WaPo at this link.

If the women of the Commonwealth of Virginia pay attention (and they usually do) and if they vote (and they are 54% of Virginia's registered voters), then Deeds should be elected Governor, and McDonnell will become a footnote.

Gene, I just got a tidbit that while in the VA legislature in 2001, McDonnell voted AGAINST equal pay for women. Seems he was true to his thesis just 8 years ago, yet this week he's saying he didn't really mean it... he's on a fast track to nowhere.

Yeah, just like George "Mr. Macaca" Allen destroyed Jim Webb in '06. This race is still quite a way aways, and nothing gets Northern Virginia liberals out to the polls in full force faster than GOP nutjobs still peddling phony "cultural" issues and supposed "family values". This guy McDonnel, in fact, sounds like a bonafide bathroom stall toe-tapper.
