So says a California GOP bigwig, Tony Quinn:

"The California Republican Party is dead. Call the undertaker, haul away the corpse. But was it murder, or was it suicide? Mostly a combination, a result both of demographic changes and the stupidity of Republican leaders".

Death of the California Republican Party: Murder or Suicide? | Fox & Hounds Daily

Should America celebrate or mourn the dead of the Republican party?

Since absolute power corrupts absolutely - I would rather have 2 crooks instead of one.

Apparently there are now 2 wings: RINO (Rep in name only - these are fiscally conservative, socially moderate ones, who feel they are lost) and RAWs (Reps Against Winning - social hard righties who are not seeing the "megatrends" and feel RINOs are not real Reps). This per a very recent interview (< 5 days) of a Republican from IL on NPR.

Please note that this is an article about CALIFORNIA - hence the rather misleading title of the thread.

And no, the GOP is no more dead than was the DNC ten years ago. The cycle will run its course, and the GOP will come roaring back. It'll take time, but it will happen.

One party rule isn't too good for anyone - so I hope the guy is right and that a decent GOP party in California rises from the ashes. The party of Cunningham, Darrell Issa, Duncan Hunter, Richard Pombo, and John Doolittle deserves to die a swift death.

Celebrate. The GOP is dead. Pop a cork. Happy New Year.

The Republican Party in California did not server the needs of the people - that is why it is in shambles... and rightly so - good riddance to bad rubbish...

I think you are very very optimistic about the return of the GOP to national prominence... All you have to do is talk to young people (under 30) and you will realize that they abhor the GOP by a wide margin...

Nope -things are just going to continue to tank for the GOP for the next 20 years or so...

I think their new emblem should be the rear-side of the elephant!!!

IMO, you really need to have a strong third party before declaring the GOP dead. After all, the Whigs managed to muddle along until the GOP was formed. If and when the day comes that a strong, dynamic new party is created, then I think it's possible the GOP could crumble. But we haven't seen a new party like that yet. Libertarians just don't have the strength.

IMO - the point is not whether the GOP is 'dead' or not...

The point is they may be in permanent and severe minority status for a long time to come...

That's just as good as dead...

And I agree, we need a third party - a CREDIBLE one...

Something started by people who are madder than a wet hen and don't want to take it anymore. They can call it the Wet Hen Party
