Republican convicted felon Sen. Ted Stevens' lead has dwindled from over 3,000 to just 971 votes after the counting today. Considering the number of votes yet to be counted, if this current pattern holds, there is no question in that Begich will overtake the convicted felon.

Maybe that 60 vote filibuster proof majority is still within reach.

It's just getting started, but early results from this afternoon's ballot counting in the contest for U.S. Senate show Mark Begich gaining ground against incumbent Sen. Ted Stevens.

The elections division still has tens of thousands of ballots left to count today and even more next week, but the latest numbers show Stevens' lead is down to 971 votes.

The new numbers, reflecting nearly 28,000 newly counted absentee ballots, are from all over the state. Election night, Stevens led the Democratic Begich by about 3,000 votes.

The state today is counting a total of about 60,000 absentee and questioned ballots.

The Division of Elections said it expects to count roughly 35,000 additional absentee and questioned ballots over the next week.

Don't worry if Ted Stevens is reelected. He will be expelled from the senate anyway. It will take a 2/3 majority vote in the senate for Stevens to be expelled. The Democrats who will have at least 57 seats will all vote to expel Ted Stevens if he's reelected. Even some Republicans, including Mitch McConnell, will vote to expel Stevens. That said, the Senate will attain the magic number required to expel Stevens.

I saw today that the remaining precincts to be counted are Begich strongholds. The conclusion was that Begich just had to make a small gain on Stevens today in order to have a good chance. This is great news!

That isn't the point...if Begich wins the seat turns Democrat. If Stevens wins and then he gets expelled, Sarah Palin appoints a temporary successor (sure to be a Republican) until a special election can be called.

Here's the analysis I saw about AK - it looks like the votes left to count may be those of strong Begich supporters.

AND, it there's a special election, I have no doubt Caribou Barbie will run for the seat.

The Republicans will do the right thing and make sure he is gone. Unfortunately the Democrats don't have the same sense.

It looks like you won't even half to wonder about Stevens' future..

Roughly 15,000 additional votes have come in in Alaska, with more to come, and Democrat Mark Begich has taken a three-vote lead over Republican Ted Stevens, 125019 to 125016.

More to come tonight and in the coming few days to finish off the race, but given where we expect the remaining votes are located, this looks very good for Begich.
