McCain is telling the truth. He has known this all along. He is trying to save face now because he knows he will lose this election and he wants to go back to the Senate with some sort of dignity, if that is possible now.

If you consider his affinities, I think he is a closet admirer of Marx. Definitely not just a socialist at heart. He is being practical and trying to appeal broadly, however.
