Sioux City Journal: McCain opposes equal pay bill in Senate (http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/articles/2008/04/24/news/latest_news/47650ead16b13ea6862574350016641a.txt - broken link)
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.
Statistically, it is. Many women are not aggressive enough to negotiate for a higher starting salary, to ask for a raise, to ask for the promotion, etc.
There are a lot of factors that are taken into consideration when determining compensation package. Potential is one of the criteria, with prior performance and future goals/objectives being key factors. I wouldn't necessarily say fertility is considered, but that commitment to the organization, desire for advancement, etc., would be. For example, you may have some women who are the primary bread winners and their husbands stay home with the children or women who choose not to have children. These individuals should not be penalized simply for being women of child bearing age.

Hopefully those that read this will understand, that I'm writing this just to spur some intelligent debate... and not because I actually believe that women are worth less to society.

Historically, women are not offered the same starting salary as men. Your statement said that they would be offered the same if the work was the same, not the negotiation style.

Of course they aren't offered an equal starting salary. Statistically speaking, women don't put in equal work.
If a woman is unable/unwilling to negotiate her salary, that shows that she probably isn't going to be taking any initiative in the work place either.
One of the saddest threads yet.....it's the 21st century , 2008, and people are arguing about the sex of an employee and what they should be paid based on whether they have a vagina or a penis......
This is the United States of America!!!! Somehow I would expect better but , guess not....
OK, carry on with your discussion of which is more important ...a vagina or a penis.........

I understand your position now, thanks. I do not agree, but I do understand it. Since many women make a conscious decison to enter the work and are not simply expected to, I have seen both initiative and drive in women that may be missing in the men who assume they will be promoted. It imight be industry specfic where you see women with less initiative.

John McCain has voted against legislation to end this conversation. That is why it is relevant.

Yes. . . there has been much liberal gnashing of teeth over the sex of employees recently. If one lib, feminist woman comes on and tell us that Palin should stay home; pregnant and barefoot we will have come full circle.
Yes, we've come a loooong way baby.
