The New York Time's Elisabeth Bumiller reports that McCain desperately wanted to name either Joe Lierberman or former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge as his running mate but was "bombarded" by threats from the right wing of the GOP predicting a divisive floor fight if he picked either of the pro-abortion candidates.

The story also outlines how little effort was made to vet Gov. Palin prior to her selection, pointing out that a team is just now being sent to look more thoroughly into her background.

Maverick?

Judgement??

You really want us to believe anything that MSNBC says - the network in the tank for obama?

Raising additional questions was the campaign's disclosure Monday that Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughter was pregnant, and reports that Palin's husband, Todd, had been arrested in 1986, when he was 22, for driving under the influence of alcohol.

McCain's campaign has dispatched a team of a dozen communications operatives and lawyers to Alaska.

Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a "jump team" to the eventual running mate's home state to work with the nominee's staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.

For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn't request paper archives for Palin's hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public.

the FBI told the Atlantic Monthly no such check took place.

"In general, we do not do vetting for political campaigns except as it might regard investigations needed for security clearances," the magazine's Web site quoted John Miller, the chief FBI spokesman. If the agency had conducted a security check of Palin, it wouldn't have shared it with the campaign, the magazine said.

Since when does the New York Times = MSNBC?

Maybe next time, you can read a little further down the page than the header bar? But then again, we all know you, in particular, aren't exactly known for actually reading the articles in your own links, let alone those of other posters...

What does MSNBC have to do with anything in that article? It clearly states it's written by The New York Times.

I for one would have been pushed over the edge if McCain had chosen another quasi-liberal to run with.

For God's sake, the Republican party is mutated enough already.
