Sen. Barack Obama, on “When does a baby get human rights?”
"The humble man Kneels before God" - Indiana Jones
Good! We need a Presidential Candidate who realizes that some decisions are beyond his scope of determination. We have endless attorneys, doctors, scientists, citizens and the Supreme Court who can and have spent countless hours doing the best they can to determine the best answer to this question.
In the end they have all done the best they can, and it's above everyone's pay grade. The expectation that he should draw a line in the sand is silly, and exposes the naivety of those who expect him to do so, when done without proper weight to the overall issue.
This opinion piece would have more credibility had it expressed a truer sense of understanding regarding the Senator's stance on the Bill mentioned in Illinois Legislature.
"2001 and 2002: OBAMA JOINED MORE THAN 40% OF THE ILLINOIS SENATE—INCLUDING NUMEROUS REPUBLICANS—IN OPPOSING “BORN ALIVE” BILLS Obama Voted Against Two Born Alive Bills, With Almost a Quarter of the Senate, Saying They Would Be Struck Down. In 2002, Obama voted against a bill to create the Induced Birth Infant Liability Act to provide that if a child is born alive after an induced labor abortion or other abortion, a parent or public guardian of the child may recover damages for costs of care to preserve and protect the life, health, and safety of the child, punitive damages, and costs and attorney’s fees against a hospital, health care facility, or health care provider who harms or neglects the child or fails to provide medical care to the child after it is born. Obama voted against a bill to amend the Statute on Statutes, to define “born-alive infant” to include “every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development.” Further defines “born alive” to mean “the complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of an infant, at any stage of development, who after that expulsion or extraction breathes or has a beating heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, regardless of whether the umbilical cord has been cut and regardless of whether of whether the expulsion or extraction occurs as a result of natural or induced labor, cesarean section, or induced abortion.” Obama predicted the bills would be struck down by a federal court were they to become law. Obama said, “Whenever we define a pre-viable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or other elements of the Constitution, we’re saying they are persons entitled to the kinds of protections provided to a child, a 9-month-old child delivered to term…That determination then essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place.” [92nd GA, SB 1661, 4/4/02, 3R P; 31-11-10 (BO: N); 92nd GA, SB 1662, 4/4/02, 3R P; 30-12-10 (BO: N); Sun-Times, 3/31/01]"
Yea, like "don't ask me" it is too hard a decision for ME to make is what I want to hear for the fruitcake running for President...sure helps me feel warm and fuzzy all over.
You don't get it. What he was saying was more akin with "it's not my place - OR ANY Presidential candidate's place - to make that decision." When does life begin? That is a highly philosophical and ultimately PERSONAL decision. That is the whole idea behind pro-CHOICE.
It's certainly not above his pay grade to deny basic medical care to "born alive" babies. He can answer that question, can't he?
Can you read? Are you able to understand anything that is not blasted on Fox News? He does NOT oppose medical care to born alive babies. That is the most idiotic assertion I have ever heard.
When that bill was in the Illinois Senate and Obama voted on it, it was in a form that clearly undermined Roe v. Wade. ALSO opposing the bill at that stage were Pro-choice republicans and the best doctors in the state. The federal version of this bill was a very different animal and he has always said that he would have voted for that. PLUS, Illinois law already requires medical care in the event that babies are born alive during abortions
Now enough of this ridiculous slander. Can't you come up with anything about Obama that isn't based on lies?
Can YOU read the very simple document that came out of obama's committee proving that they inserted the very same federal language protecting Roe, and THEN voted down the complete bill?

That's not true. The Illinois Senate bill did not have the very same Federal language. While the differences between the Federal and State versions were just a few words, those few words amounted to significantly different definitions. The state versions gave full legal rights to fetuses that were not yet viable. And, specifically, the State version did not include a part that clarified that "legal rights of a person" did not extend to fetuses that were not born yet. Thus, it was viewed to be a possible threat to Roe v. Wade (which is why SOOO many people - including the best doctors - voted against it.)
Words, barry, just "words". I just don't get it. He knew this subject would be coming up - and that's the best he could do? He is his own worst enemy.
Don't get me wrong - I loved it when he said that.
