Here is a new article from MSNBC, might find it interesting: McCain more conservative than his record - John McCain News - MSNBC.com

Quote:
The likely Republican presidential nominee is much more conservative than voters appear to realize. McCain leans to the right on issue after issue, not just on the Iraq war but also on abortion, gay rights, gun control and other issues that matter to his party's social conservatives.
Quote:
Nearly a third of Clinton supporters said they would back McCain if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee, and more than a quarter of Obama supporters said they would back McCain over Clinton, according to Associated Press-Ipsos polling released Thursday.
Good read for those who are concerned about his voting record and it includes how he voted on 10 key issues.

Great. He's somewhat socially conservative when those issues really don't matter to me. Yet he's a liberal spender on war and the military where it does count.

Can I have a real Conservative for the Republican nominee?

This just makes those Dems who claim they will vote for McCain if their candidate does not win the primary seem really ridiculous. Who could reasonably say they'll jump from their (primary-losing) Democrat over to McCain in the general election? Are you really that dim to the issues and willing to vote on personality?

Not really - half of Dems are more towards the center and not extreme left - so for some swinging right is the "right" thing to do and for others swinging left is in their best interests.

I don't understand why an Obama voter would swing to McCain tho, that is going from far left to right instead of stopping in the center - Hillary.. 25% polled said they would do just that though if Hillary took the nomination.

I can forgive his military spending because I can see where it is badly needed in areas, but what I can't forgive is how badly some of these DOD contracts are monitored. He would do well to increase accountability and oversight (IMO) for military contracts so less=more.

Define real Conservative. And are there actually any left or have they all drifted to the center?

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Ron Paul.

Those ideas sound great to me but my concern is pulling support from one canidate and costing him the election to a canidate I REALLY can't stomach...

After reviewing these "universal health care" plans by both Hillary and Obama I am starting to really consider the GOP this year. They have the gun stance I want, I know they will do right by the military - but I do like Clinton as a fiscal conservative and wonder if Hillary would follow in his footsteps?

And speaking of fiscal conservation, what do you think of Blake's Ashby's comments regarding McCain?

Quote:
"McCain is very much a traditional Republican, and, no matter what the economic fantasists of talk radio say, an actual fiscal conservative. The type of fiscal conservative that remembers that the U.S. government has a balance sheet like any other economic entity, and layering on trillions of dollars of debt is not good for the long-term health of the country. The type that actually knows the difference between a tax cut and a tax deferral. Back in the day, we didn’t have to talk about these variations of “fiscal conservative”, because every Republican believed in a balanced budget, (“What kind of a fool would think that borrowed money didn’t have to be repaid?”). Let’s hope McCain is taking the party back in that direction, and we can stop deluding ourselves that tax cuts pay for themselves and so don’t steal from our children. Supply Side, like that other famous economic fantasy, Socialism, needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history."
Ashby 2008 » Blog Archive » Congratulations John McCain (http://ashby2008.com/blog/?p=10 - broken link) (page 9 also has some thoughts on McCain)

BTW - Paperhouse one more question if you are still around.

Is Bush a fiscal conservative? I don't think he is but trying to google it comes up with 2 arguments..Is McCain better or worse than Bush in this area? I read up more on Paul and see why he is labled more conservative overall, just curious what their main differences are as far as this subject.

Thanks if you have any insight!

Is more conservative that people would think. If he's a true Conservative, then I'm the pope and I'll see you in NYC!
