The GOP will survive. It may have some growing pains, but the GOP will be around for a while.

The GOP will get through this rough spot and the Dems will overreach on something in the future that will give the Republicans a perfect opening to regain influence.

This is a good point, although if this is a rough spot for the Repubs what would you call 2008?

The gun control talk this year singed them badly in rural states. They have to be really really careful on that topic considering all the Senate seats up for grab in 2014 in the "fly over" states where the gun violence rate is 1/4 or so of the national average.
