Experts cite lack of proof that colleges drive students from church

Quote:
Santorum told talk show host Glenn Beck on Thursday that "62% of kids who go into college with a faith commitment leave without it."
I really think he's trying to create some kind of class warfare within the GOP with all this anti-college crap.

As an aside, I find it rather ironic that he bashes higher education so much when he himself has a BA, an MBA, and a JD.

Education for me, none for you.

To be fair, Santorum, being a devout Christian is immune to Satan's trickery. Not to say he wasn't tempted while on campus, but as a Christian warrior he is better equipped to fight Satan than your average fundamentalist.

He also admitted on Meet the Press that his seven kids will go to college, "if that's what they want".

There are many crazy RW Republicans who favor a Corporate/Theocratic form of government. Sarah Palin is their true leader, but Santorum is carrying the ball for them right now, since he's still in the race.

But, there are still enough rational actors in the party, plus a certain number of the crazies, who realize Romney gives them the best shot at beating Obama.

So Willard will get the nomination. Then the real suspense in the election will be, just how motivated is the GOP to beat Obama? Motivated enough to turn out and vote for Romney, a guy they dislike and distrust? That is the $100,000 question.

AKA, once they get into an environment where they are allowed to think for themselves, they do.

Have to somewhat agree with you on this. Yes, we all know some kids are pretty brainwashed by the liberal educators but if kids have had a strong religious upbringing I doubt 62% of them turn their back on religion after college. I wonder where he gets these figures?

Ideally, college is a place where all kinds of values and assumptions kids have about life are examined and reevaluated, including whatever religion they may have been raised with. That's not brainwashing, it is learning critical thinking skills. Many become secular humanists, others retain their faiths, still others adopt new ones. It is a beneficial and necessary process.

Brainwashing is what goes on in most religions. I'm not surprised a rigid, patriarchal control freak like Santorum feels threatened by the thought that kids may learn to think for themselves.

Yep. To quote Thomas Paine:

"A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support."

It doesn't surprise me that certain kind of people and politicians would prefer that kids stay out of school.

That's how it's supposed to work: education = good, lack of education and wallowing in ignorance = bad. Where would society be without people deciding rationalism and the scientific method are beneficial?

The right applauds lack of education and ignorance to heard the masses. Many right wingers think education is unneeded "liberal stuff" and that the only things they need to know in life is how to shoot a gun, carry a bible, and where to vote republican

Santorum... Oh bambino!

Stop blaming everything on other people. I have chosen to distance myself from the Catholic church because I dont agree with a lot of the things they are preaching. Not because I go to college

Does he really think young people don't think for themselves?
