Republican hopeful Mitt Romney has opened up a 20-point lead in the final days leading up to the Republican primary in Florida, according to a Suffolk University/7NEWS (WSVN-Miami) poll of likely Republican primary voters in Florida.
Romney led Newt Gingrich 47 percent to 27 percent, while Rick Santorum got 12 percent and Ron Paul finished fourth with 9 percent. Five percent were undecided.
“It is almost certain that Mitt Romney will top his 39 percent showing in New Hampshire,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. “This poll also tells us that Romney could reverse and exceed Newt Gingrich’s percentage and margin in South Carolina – and do it in Gingrich’s backyard.”
Romney led Gingrich 55 percent to 24 percent among those voters who indicated that they had already voted, and he led 56 percent to 23 percent among Hispanic voters.
"If Mitt Romney hits a historic benchmark in this election, he has Hispanic voters to thank,” said Paleologos.
Sarah Palin says Florida voters should “ rage against the machine” and vote for Newt. Sarah, both you and Newt are parts of the machine. Damaged, malfunctioning parts that make a lot of terrible noises... but still parts of the machine. Sarah said “both party machines” are trying to “crucify Newt Gingrich.” Sarah, the Democrats aren’t trying to crucify Newt. On the contrary, they want to see him be resurrected.
I think the Party Bosses and "Insiders" in the GOP want Romney to get the nomination. Perhaps they feel he is the only one that can sway some of the "independents" and those sitting on the fence to not vote for Obama and make a Republican candidate win in November.
This is not got good news for the conservative rank and file grass-roots Republicans - they see Romney as nothing more than "Obama Lite." Many conservatives suspect that once in office Romney will quickly forget all the things he said to woo the conservatives in the GOP and revert back to the way he was as Massachusetts Governor.
Republicans, conservative or moderate, will in the end vote for Romney because they will see him as 'the lesser of two evils'. However, in my view, the passionate conservative base of the GOP will not be enthusiastic about his candidacy and will not raise the huge financial sums or provide the impressive number of volunteers to put Romney over the top. Obama's campaign will outspend the GOP. Obama's wavering liberal and moderate base will in the end vote for him; but his approval ratings are not good for an incumbent and he is very vulnerable.
It's possible that without enthusiastic support from conservative Republicans, Obama might clinch a second term. Recent history has shown that "moderate" Republicans like Dole or McCain often lose, and true bearers of the conservative standard like Reagan are victorious.
As the Tea Party embarrassingly hops from candidate to candidate, the GOP establishment is excitingly getting ready to crown a candidate who serves as the idea-lab for the Obama White House.
