I wondering what are some things that every educated person should know? I should note that I'm not talking in just an academic sense, but I'm thinking of other things like CPR, foreign languages, and self-defense, for instance.

Well, I was going for something more esoteric like "his own limitations", but that's not a bad beginning list, Trustme.

Re: Foreign Languages/Travel:
1. Never laugh when someone is speaking a foreign language/your native language and makes a mistake;
2. If in a group, do not speak in a language that all cannot understand;
3. If you speak a foreign language, let it be known (i.e. don't purposefully omit the knowledge so that you can hear what people "really think");
4. Don't be disrespectful or disdainful of a foreign language/culture b/c you do not understand it;
5. When traveling, always remember the adage: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Obey local customs, especially re: dress, and do not whine/complain/act insulted/offended when customs are different from your own; also, do your research;
6. Don't take advantage of a person who is learning your language (i.e. tell them that "skank" means "beautiful") in order to entertain yourself at their expense;
7. When traveling, don't act like an arrogant prig (i.e. my country is better than your country or my country is the best in the world);
8. When traveling, don't walk around like you're terrified of being accosted nor like you are completely oblivious to what is going on around you;
9. Don't make assumptions ("assume" makes an ass of both u and me);
10. Always remember that you are a representative of your country.

The most important thing "Educated" people should know is just because someone is "Uneducated" it does not mean they are stupid.

I agree with the above, and would add manners, both for every day living and also business etiquette.

Every educated person should be able to accurately explain and do the math for quantum theory, write a 1000 page doctoral thesis on the crystaline structure of quartz over a weekend, correctly calcuate the trajectory and velocity needed to send a space probe from earth to Zeta Reticuli in under 2534.781112232 years and be able to properly butter toast.

Oh yea, and being good and respecting others is a pretty good idea too.

How to survive on as little as possible. Even educated people are at risk of losing their job or personal bankruptcy.
