I am a librarian who was asked to create a graphic novel/comics book program for students of any age. Since I am not as familiar with the format I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas of a fun program or a fun series to work with? Thanks!!!!

Kids nowadays love comics from abroad (e.g. "manhwa" from Korea and "manga" from Japan). You have to be a bit careful though, things like nudity are more acceptable in Asia than here in the US, though there are generic comics which are great like "Chii's New Home" which focus on animals.

If you're looking to add new comics, definitely check out your local comic book store. Marvel, DC and other publishers have a wide variety of comics in different styles with different genres. Some of them are more risque, but there are many that are acceptable for kids.

I would suggest looking at a librarian list serve or discussion board. Here's one: Librarians who LibraryThing Message Board | Librarians who LibraryThing | LibraryThing We have an occasional manga club at the library where I work. There's a big difference between the cartoonish manga stuff and the more novelish graphic novels. I much prefer the latter. We have a large collection (for a small library) of both. I would suggest that you visit a bigger library and check some out. We separate our GN between the juvenile, YA and adult because the GN often deal with adult subjects. Neil Gaiman is awesome.

A google search for "graphic novels for students" produces a long list of useful-looking results.
