If the optimism in this article is indeed well placed, we could very well be in for a much brighter economic future here in the U.S.

Is that why we have such are huger inceare in LNG facities;because we won't be importing any gas?No we are importing not only more natural gas but we catually are importing fisihed pareoleum products nwo from other countries. Anyway you look at ti the follars are goign out of country afster and faster because we fail inceasingly to supply more and more of our own energy needs. until the prices of recovery by different methods are more eqaul it will remain so.

Looks pretty heavy on hype. Real Heavy.

Take the cited example of 1.2 Trillion barrel equivalent of Oil as proven reserves = 60 years run-time.

True or False? Maybe of Gas use alone, but not of "Oil Equivalent."

Check the basic math:

1.2 E 12 (notation for 1.2 Trillion) / 30 E 9 (30 Billion barrels of oil alone used world wide per year) = 40 years max.

And that assumes the underlying "equivalent" were correct, and that it was all recoverable. Add on top the present consumption of Gas.

Gas may have some wider application, but will not begin to carry the load to replace oil.

Would still be a far better path to head off of our collective Hydrocarbon addiction as a major energy source upfront, but like most addicts backed into a corner -- We must first go through "bargaining" -- the next stage after Denial. So let the bargaining and deal-making begin.

So -- Hype on! Let's go buy stock!

" Advances in technology for extracting gas from shale and methane beds have quickened dramatically, altering the global balance of energy faster than almost anybody expected."

The known reserves of Oil Shale alone in the western U.S. could free us from the world's oil market if these advances could glean the oil from the rock cheaply enough.

As to methane........Oh, buddy! There is so much methane in the world that no one knows just how much is locked up in the frozen sea beds of methane alone let alone from terrestrial reserves!!

Then methane can also be "made"on demand from waste products both human and animal. Now hows THAT for a sustainable fuel source.

I live in area that has a lot of that Marcellus (Spelling?) shell gas. I'm hoping that it will be as good for our local economy as some people are saying!

it certainly would be good to know if oil shale deposits are recoverable, since the united states has the largest oil shale deposits in the world.

These technologies & resources are all very price sensitive. (and they are not new)

We (USA) will be paying closer to last yrs pricing, or at least world market rates with devalued US dollars. When gas is $5/gal there are lots of profitable ways to produce energy, so... no we will not necessarily 'run-out' BUT we will pay (dearly) for our high energy habit. Too bad the USA is so 'benevolent' (and trusting), and the Chinese are very strategic. We 'tool / equip the world with technology / edu, and they are gonna trounce us(a) The USA essentially developed the current energy structure in the Middle east when our own resources got too expensive. OPEC is sitting on 'the-bank' and they are gonna keep enough resources to do them good. The USA will sell their resources to foreign companies (as we have done with many wind farms and alternative energy resources, the USA will eventually privatize and sell our hydro systems, the profit will go overseas and our prices will skyrocket.

Be prepared. Conserve, build passive solar, walk.

50 mpg since 1976, no dinosaurs / OPEC required, Go get yourself a $35.00 VW diesel Rabbit, and join the club (check your neighbor's brier patch, worked for me!)
