Much of the growth in the Sunbelt has been created by people showing up. With the increase in population came construction, retail, education and other service jobs. We can call this the sprawl economy. Most of the manufacturing jobs did not relocate to the south/sunbelt, but to China, Mexico and other emerging nations. Now the boom is over and the sprawl economy is suffering. This should come as no surprise.
