Just curious about the folks out there who work in manufacturing...
Many different places require mandatory shut downs for many different reasons... most of them happening in the Summer months.
With the added stress of today's economy, some companies are also doing temporary layoffs,etc...
The company that my husband is employed by does a shutdown in the Summer to clean the machinery,etc... All employees ,even non-line employees such as himself, are required to take the shutdown off.
They are expected to take this time away from their vacation time. Seems a little unfair, but we know several other people who work in manf.who are required to do the same.
There are others though who do not have to use their vacation time, some of those "others" have had the entire Summer off and are still able to use their vacation time on top of it. Some of these "others" are now working off our tax dollars due to the bailout of GM and have had the ENTIRE summer off with pay (85% pay plus unemployment picks up the other 15%) AND yet, they are still able to keep their gazillion hours of vacay and take off even more time, with pay....
Seems odd that this could be going on ,especially off of our tax dollars, but it is going on.
SO, we would just like to see how many people out there are required to take a shutdown off and use their vacay time or are able to take it off and still receive their other vacation time.
I'm in oil and we have shift work. The operations folks only get paid when they are working during their shift. During maintenance periods we dont need to staff as many operations folks....more maintenance crews. No one is forced to take vacations, but many do as they know work is only available during certain times.
It depends on the contract, if any. When I worked in the glass industry thirty years ago the week between Christmas and New Year's was a mandatory shutdown for maintenance. We got paid for most of those days. People that came in for the work got paid regular rate plus time and a half in addition to what they were paid as shutdown pay. Those slots were real competitive since you got triple your pay plus half. When we would go on customer site, usually because of quality problems we did 12 hour days at all time and a half. A double shift paid time and a half for the first 4 hours and double time for the second.
Most manufacturing workers I know, if not paid, get unemployment during the shutdown.
My husband has worked in manufacturing since graduating from grad school 18 years ago. He has worked for 5 different companies in those 18 years and every one of them has had a shutdown during the year at some time. EVERY one of those companies (these are pharm and bio-med companies) required their employees to use vacation time for the shutdown. So esentially yes, they were/are getting paid for the shutdown. They have to use their vacay time though, they don't get 7 weeks off and then still get to use vacation time in addition to it. Depends on the contract I know, however, what contracts enable people to take off all that time but still have vacation time?
So, not alot of answers at all,let me make it simple...
Do you find it unusual (especially today) that people are not having to use their vacation time during their temp.layoff time?
