I feel for these people, it is a very tough time to be out of work.
We are caught in a vicious spiral:
- People don't spend because they're worried for their jobs which leads to...
- Companies cutting jobs because revenue is down which leads to...
- People without jobs, thus no money to spend which leads to...
- Companies...
Its hard to see anything breaking the cycle anytime soon.
* I have no job
* Thusly I am spending no money:
* I make coffee at home
* I make dinner at home
* I'm not buying a house
* I'm not buying any car
* I am not buying new clothes
* I am not buying personal electronic gadgets
I have no job so I am only paying the bills that are required to survive and spending nothing more. If and when I do get a job, I will use that money to pay bills that I am behind on. If and when I get those caught up, I will stash every dime I can get for a rainy day. I will still not be buying anything.
If there are millions of people like me out there, this economy is deep deep trouble.

Well, I hear the gun industry is thriving, and I suspect beer and wine companies are thriving too. (wonder why?)
One of my wife's golfing partners owns a liquor store. She's recently purchased a foreclosed house in a neighboring city where she wants to move to after selling the store. Well, it turns out that she just can't move yet because she found out that her store is doing better than ever before.
What's sad about this is that more people are turning to find comfort in booze rather than perk themselves up with a strong dosage of espresso...
I am working more hours than ever. I am making more money than I have in a long time.
I go to a Starbucks that is supposed to close at 10 pm only to find that it is already closed at 9:45 pm. Lost sale.
I find out that Starbucks does not brew a dark roast after 6 pm (or 2 PM) based on a particular sales. Again, another lost sale.
I give the staff credit for trying to "upsell" me to a much more expensive brew. However, as I told them, I can drive home in fifteen minutes and brew the coffee at less than half the cost. And the last three times I have stopped, that is what I have ended up doing.
Personally, I am beginning to really enjoy the Baton Rouge- based Community Coffee Dark Roast. And at $5.50/lb, it is a relative bargain.
Seems to be layoffs everywhere. Just today Catepillar announced 20,000 layoffs, Home Depot 7,000, and Sprint 8,000. We're in for a rough ride this year. Very few places safe from job cuts.
