Is the about money? Depression due to lost jobs, lost retirement funds?
I don't know anyone in this situation but of course people don't talk about suicide do they,
I know some people who are just trying to make it to 65 and Medicare and Social Security but it is years away for many.

Dr. Alex Crosby, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he had studied the association between economic downturns and suicide going back to the 1920s and found that suicide was highest when the economy was weak. One of the highest rates in the country’s modern history, he said, was in 1932, during the Great Depression, when the rate was 22.1 per 100,000, about 70 percent higher than in 2014.
Some people see their future as hopeless because of some traumatic event. Job loss, loss of stored wealth due to a bad investment or bad economic time they can't get a job etc. and mentally they can't deal with adjusting to the new conditions they are thrust into so their only way to "fix" it is to check out.
White people were disproportionately employed in jobs that have seen significant contraction, like manufacturing and mining. Many of those folks were not well-educated or adaptable to the current labor market. Many have seen their standing decline, likely causing an increase in suicides.
Most rural areas and small towns are heavily white, and these areas have also been disproportionately impacted by job losses, drug abuse, and a wide variety of social ills. Jobs are consolidating in major metros, which are generally less white.

I see people living out of 30 year old cars, barely able to feed themselves, medical issues which cost $$$ to fix, they can't afford (State will, but wait time is long)
Read one guy was going to OD on tylenol after the bank took his house. Never mind he still had brains enough to get a good job, the loss of his "Prize" was too much for him...
Some suffer from various mental issues....
The Great Depression caused many to commit suicide as their house of cards was their wealth...Suicide was more preferred than being seen as a "Loser" or worse "Poor" Others faced the choice Starve to death or leave quicker...I would choose quick any day...
I think suicide is underreported because there are many deaths attributed to the opioid epidemic plaguing suburbia. I would think it is even more of a problem in the less prosperous parts of the nation.
There is also an baseline of manic/depressive disease in the population.
