You are aware that for most people, living with Mom and Dad is not a lifetime option?
Take advantage of the opportunity while it lasts, but understand that at some point you're probably going to have to assume 100% of the burden of your housing costs.
Exactly, here we have rebounded and are now above the 2005-2006 peak home prices. Moving here is not advisable without a good job lined up due to the similarly high rent. The good jobs are here, but so are the high prices. One feeds the other as the demand drives the prices up.
I don't know much about Seattle, but when I look at where our HQ is based near Boston, it is almost impossible to get a start there without loads of cash coming in or corporate assistance. It's often hard to find anything within a reasonable commute to the city for under $2k. When you need a first, last, and either a broker fee/security deposit all up front, you're easily going to be out $6k+. Even for a big house share, you're still going to be out as much as someone renting a 1BR/2BR in most of the country. That's not to mention you're still living like a college kid. For someone coming from a poor area and not making much money, getting a start in an expensive metro, provided you get a job in the first place, is really difficult.
People should enlist because they want to serve, then the benefit comes as a perk of serving. People should not serve expressly for the benefits.
Right and that's not what I said. I made a point of saying that I consider military service to be an honorable job or career whether a person uses the educational benefits or not. As others have pointed out, military service can be a very eye opening experience in many positive ways. It's not all "PTSD" or combat duty or getting a leg blown off or killing babies. The vast majority of military personnel don't ever pick up a weapon in a war zone and yet they are serving their country while building a life for themselves and their loved ones - often in some pretty interesting places doing things they never dreamed of doing, like the doctor serving in Germany.
The military is just one other option for people to consider. It's not the answer for everyone.
People just value the fancy poetic belief in independence over their own financial security.
No, most people find they NEED to move away from home in order to pursue job opportunities, marry and start a family, etc. Living at home long-term isn't a viable option for most people, even if it is for you.
What if you live in a place with a strong economy already? And actually I can make more money living at home than I could by moving. Look:
80k texas - (3000 mortgage x 12 = 36000) = 56000
60k Bay Area hmmmm...
3000 is a really high mortgage payment in texas...
okay. Here's a calculation for your scenario.
Move away job:
120k
Home job:
60k
Mortgage: 36000 <------ You do not need a big expensive house all to yourself
Food: 12000 <---------- Learn how to cook
Cellular Bill: 1200 <-------- Get a prepaid or pay as you go. Even if you add texting in it should be under $800
Maintenance: 2800 <------- Which maintenance? Home, car, other?
Entertainment: 24000 <---------- Maybe you are hanging out with people that have excessively expensive tastes
Gasoline: 4000 <---------- Move closer to work
Total Expenses:80000 <---------- Majorly superfluous and bloated
Not worth it.
It'll be so cute when I rent to those people struggling to make it by on welfare.
You do recognize you're on welfare yourself? You're not paying most of your living expenses, the Bank of Mom and Dad is. Let's see how things go once that bank is closed before pointing any fingers.
My dad thinks that the feds are deliberately making college costly in order to "force" people to join the military, which I think there might be a grain of truth to. I would never support going to the military for a second. Never, ever reward such bad behavior. We must show our nation who's boss!
You have to do something to keep everybody from going to college. In some countries you have one-shot tests that you have to score well in. In the USA you have high costs, and subsidize the high achieving students that you really want in school. Maybe Johnny Jerkface really is brilliant but was just a slacker in high school. If he gets his act together and pulls a 4.0 for a couple years in CC he can probably get a scholarship too.

Most places will see the opposite of that, making more in CA and less in TX.
I don't understand why they don't just wait tables and live at home instead of living in a slum in Oakland. They'd be much better off financially.
400,000+ people choose to call Oakland home says it all...
I'm 5th generation Oakland
