Where did I say ANYTHING about age? Except Teen-ager and what is common for almost ALL teenagers?
Minimum wage jobs are NOT meant to be primary household income jobs.
I don't believe your figure.
While a quick lookup didn't turn up any primary sources, a number of cites are saying that 51.2% of minimum wage workers are under 25 - not quite half are over 25 but apparently close enough for a lot of people to round it up.
Over half of all minimum wage earners are over the age of 25. Thirty percent of those workers are over the age of 34, and twenty percent are over the age of 44. This issue is not just about young people and summer or part-time jobs.
Minimum wage is one of the problems with Americas economy. The first big issue with our economy is who holds the majority of the country money. In America the majority of the money is held in oil, which is not dumping money into its blue collar employees who are the driving force of the economy. Then next health care, profits are huge for a few and back breaking $10 per hour jobs for the majority. We have to get money flowing around to get Americans back into making and buying things from American owned companies. Another big issue is the imbalance of imports vs exports. Australia exports about 10 billion more than it imports, they are making money by exporting more. In America for Sept 2012 we imported 228.5 billion while only exporting 187 billion. America was essentially created based on being the low cost exporting country of the world. During the colonial period it was understood that more was to leave this country and very little was to come in without an extra fee. Slavery helped build the supply and Europeans demanded American product. Once that was outlawed companies used child labor and immigrant labor. Then we finally ended up with minimum wage which was made obsolete in manufacturing with unions. Now we have very few high paying manufacturing jobs left and the minimum wage service sector is the nations fastest growing field. Our ship is going to sink if things keep going the way they are. Our neighbor to the north, Canada keeps my area alive by shopping like crazy buying luxury items us locals would see sit on racks for months before they are stolen or sold for 80 percent off. Only problem for us is the high end companies are opening up shops in Canada .

Common sense says that all three factors come into play at various times and to varying degrees.
Min wage jobs are not supposed to be your life's career.
But that is what some people have done.
Up the wage at the bottom will not solve all their problems.
$1/hour more will not put them on easy street, especially if they are working less than 40 hours a week.
What do you propose..$40K a year for someone who works 25 hours a week as a cashier ?
Then what happens to salaries above that where skill is needed that pay $40K a year ?
We all start out in the business world with low paying jobs. As we gain experience and/or education we move up.
But that is individual drive, incentive to live better that fuels it.
Government handouts and constantly increasing min wage is no incentive; it's just the opposite.
people live in fantasy land
they think you can just give min wage workers 20 bucks an hour to be useless and the world just becomes all puppies and rainbows
