When I coon hunted had a 35 pound boar take on 3 hounds (1 was a friends and never fought a coon before this) and was nasty bites all over as coon would not tree, was a 3 legged as got caught in trap at one time. Everytime pulled dogs off and went to shoot it would come at me. Finally the female got on it and broke the coons neck. A sow with kit's is even more dangerous as will fight to protect young.

Coons are unbelievably tough animals. I killed one this morning. It took 4 - .22 LR standard velocity rounds and it was still going, crawling round. I've shot them in the head, ears, ear, body. No matter where I shoot them, they all take numerous .22 shots to kill them fast unless you want to wait many minutes for them to die.

I've killed over 50 of coons in the last few years, NEVER has 1 - 22 killed them fast. A pellet gun with 1 shot kills a rabbit. Possums go down easy with a .22. But coons are in a league of their own. If I used .22 Stingers things may be a little better, but I need quiet, so I use a suppressed pistol and .22 standard velocity rounds in an semi-urban area.

Coons pull apart the welded wire cage they are trapped in and I have to use pliers to bend the wire back. Can't budge the wire with my fingers. No doubt if they have enuf time and teeth they would break out of the cage.

A lady in the area had 36 chickens when she first started 3 years ago. After the hawks, minks and coons went to work she was left with 4 chickens...and she had good security with her coop.

Find a copy of 'Raccoon Nation' dvd at your library...amazing animals.

I wouldn't be too worried. People hunt raccoons with dogs. Just make sure your dog is UTD on shots. To try and prevent this in the future do you have a fence around your yard? You could set up live traps. I'd talk to your local animal control and the wildlife/ conservation officer as well to get a suggested solution.

When I was a young farm kid ( early 1950's ) my dad always warned us about raccoons fighting dogs.

We lived near a river and the neighbor lost a good dog because the dog went in the water and the raccoon got under his neck and pulled the dog under the water and drowned it.

Today, contacting rabies from raccoons is a bigger worry .

A full grown raccoon is fully capable of killing even a large dog by drowning or using their claws to disembowel the dog.The dogs that hunt raccoon hunt in packs.

A fence is useless at keeping raccoons out. On any given night I can look out my back door and see raccoons walking very calmly along my privacy fence.

Trapping doesn't work. Relocating one only means more territory for another to expand into.
