Hi, I'm planning on taking my dog on a 80 mile trip and she has never been on a long trip before. I will use a cage more then the size of her. I wonder if this will be real stressful for her? What can I do to make her trip less stressful? She is 8 years old.

Thanks, John

What kind of dog? Is she used to a crate - or will that be a new experience also? If she has never been in a crate/cage, I would start her getting familiar with it - in the house and maybe on a few shorter trips to the gas station or just for short drives around town - to see how she does....

Hi, It's been a long time sense I took her in a dog cage. Last time in the cage when she was 1 and 2 years old. She a mixed black lab and german shepherd.

Thanks, John

Like suggested, I would take her on a few short runs to see how she does. You will also find out if she will get car sick or not. (If she does, you won't want to feed or water her before hand) Crating her shouldn't be too bad, if you continue to talk to her or have someone with her to calm her down those first few short trips.
Also, Bachs Rescue Remedy is great for just this sort of thing. A few drops on a cookie or treat an hr or so before you leave, should calm her down considerably.

Is there any reason she needs to be in the crate? Either way, I think getting her used to the situation so it doesn't freak her out when you are going on the real trip. 80 miles isn't too long (we have taken our Golden on 15 hour trips - she pretty much just sleeps in the way back of the car but she knows thats where she needs to stay) but it would probably be easier for both of you if it wasn't a totally new experience. Also, if you don't know whether she gets car sick, I probably would avoid feeding her right before the trip. Feed her when you get there if possible. Depending on the time of day etc, she may just fall asleep for the hour or so you're in the car... Good luck!

I'm going to take her in Ford Excape for the first time and I will be able to talk to her all the way on the trip. I will do the short trips to see if she can handle this. I'm afraid she might cause me an accident if not caged.

Thanks, John

If your traveling alone, then caged is probably the safest for both of you. Good luck and keep us posted.

Well that's a pretty darned good reason to keep her caged! Didn't know at 8 whether she was pretty much a couch potato or not...

One thing about her she is lazy for a dog. I have her sleep near my bed at night and I think she would sleep 20 hours a day if let her. She is very nerves dog. I'm traveling alone also.

Is she a chewer? If she tends to be nervous putting a Nylabone or something in the crate with her might give her an outlet for those nerves....
