I have heard of dogs eating grass to throw up and just saw my dog do it, only threw up the grass. Does anyone know why. Now prior to the grass eating I was sitting with my dog and heard its stomach rumble and the dog looked at its stomach then few minutes later went outside to eat the grass.

Sometimes they do it in order to "settle" their stomach and inevitably throw it up. If it isn't thrown up, sometimes it's because of a vitamin deficiency...and sometimes they just like to eat grass! Mostly it is normal, but if there are any other signs or symptoms you might want to have him checked for an intestinal problem...oh, and PLEASE don't let your dog do this if you use any kind of pesticide on your yard. Deadly.

Since your dog is just recovering from being ill ... maybe he needs something to sooth his tummy!

Yeah, my cats do that when their stomach is upset... usually results in a throw-up that's a mix of food & hairball. Blech. I'd only worry if they did it ALL the time, and then a vet visit would definitely be in order. My Kona (cat) does it more than average, so she's been to the vet for this before - they just put her on a different diet, and she's doing much better now.

My dogs do it when they have ingested something they shouldn't have. The grass irritates their stomach, so they can throw up and get rid of the ingestion, too. In my dogs' case, sometimes they get a sharp point from their choo hooves, and need to gerf it back up, and grass helps them. It's not a harmful thing.

My dog just likes to eat grass. Very particular about it. Must be a medium to dark green broad stemmed grass or she won't even consider it.

there is chlorophyll(sp) in grass and it settles to stomach ...you can actually buy it in capsules. They eat grass like we eat crackers to settle our stomachs. ..its ok.
We have some and put it in codys water when the tum tum is upset as we do have pesticides on the grass

My dog eats grass when her stomach is upset. I don't let her eat too much grass, however, because I heard that if too much is ingested it can lead to intestinal blockage. I give her a half a tablet of Pepcid AC, and it usually settles down her stomach.

Dogs will eat grass if they are hungry or if their stomach is upset.
In both cases it settles the stomach.
