I have been spending 9+ months overseas for education for the last 5 years. In that time, my dog was cared for by my mother (the registered co-owner) and after her death, my father. Last week, a few days before I was to arrive home from Australia, we had an incident.
My sister (basically a non-resident at home who virtually lives with her boyfriend) decided to come home and do some laundry/drop something off/whatever at around 9 or 10 pm. Dad had left for work at 4:30 pm, to return at 5:30 the next morning. She lets the dog out, but forgot to let him in (she hasn't been back since), leaving him out all night. We're on LI in NY. Overnight temperatures drop to freezing. Early in the morning (almost 5), it began to rain. My dog digs out under the fence and sausages himself through. This is what every husky owner fears: an escape in the wild blue yonder. Apparently I had nothing to fear. He trotted into my neighbour's yard. Being soaked by freezing rain and caked with mud, he sat under her bedroom window and began to do the typical husky cry.
I should point out that since Jack was a puppy, he has socialised consistently with many neighbours in a half mile radius around my house. God forbid something were to happen, there would be many who'd recognise him as well as many people he would know are friendly.
Anyway, my neighbour is fortunately an early riser and came out to a very grateful dog who just wanted to go back inside. While she didn't have a key to my house, my father very fortunately came home just as she brought him back into my yard. Anyway, I am happy that my dog had more sense than my bloody sister.
