Sunset, if you are looking for a dog, I think you should be focusing on your lifestyle, level of activity, how you like to interact with a dog, what you want to do with your dog, and what type of dog matches that, rather than appearance.
Do you want a dog for companionship, or for what reason?

I want a dog with Three criteria: 1) Medium size; 2) Not weird looking (not like those Terriers ); and 3) Shed little.
sunset..what are you talking about "not weird looking" "like Those terriers" WHAT terriers, the pondego looks like MANY of the terrier group...the wirehaired pondengo even more so terrier like...
if your going for a certain "look"
basenji
canaan dog
coated (with hair) Xolo
however NONE of those breeds are suitable for a first time dog owner, NONE could be left outdoors unsupervised an ALL woul need alot of excersize training an attention...
only the xolo would be considered LOW shedding...
short haired dogs tend to be the heaviest shedders...
to get low sheding you need to look into curly coated or wirehaired breeds...
you might like the looks of the lundehund too...
however those suggestions are based on a "look" you seem to like and given we know nothing about your lifestyle, living arrangments, time available, training intersts ect its IMPOSSIBLE to give you a good suggestion...
also given your "idea" of "ugly" and "weird" its pretty impossible to tell what your lokoing for because you refer to an entie group as looking "weird" an yet the dogs you point out as youd like look similar to many of the dogs in the group you say "looks weird"
My ideal dog would be the one that look like a Lab or a Dingo (you know, regular and not weird at all), but a lab shed alot and a little too big, and a dingo is well, hard to find and a little "wild."
ok, so how much time per day would youbeable to excersize the dog, are you planning on walking every day, how far?, jogging, letting the dog just run around the yard?.
what kind of hours do you work, do you have a fenced yard, have you owned dogs before, what kind of training ar you willing to put in (train at hom, go to classes? hire a trainer?)
Are you looking for a couch potatoe snuggle buddy or a frisby crazed jogging partner, do you like to have lots of people over or are you more of a loner?!
caanan or carolina dogs would fit the "dingo look"
But NOT breeds to be taken on without any real thoguht, there not "beginner" breeds.
the Portugese Pendengo? Three criteria: 1) Medium size; 2) Not weird looking (not like those Terriers ); and 3) Shed little.
