Sounds like the idiot was trying to provoke the ranger. He got what he deserved.

It started with the dogs being off leash and went downhill from there.

Rangers at NPL have authority to do whatever they deem necessary for protecting the themselves, others, the park and animals. They actually have state or federal authority depending on the park. Since this is a National Park, that gave this ranger federal authority. If they say stop, it means stop. If they ask you a question. And you lie, you can be charged...I think you get my drift. (It would be the same if this man walked away from the police, sheriff or state patrol officer. Rangers have that same authority in a park setting.)

This person started by having an attitude of entitlement and the ranger got a bigger attitude. When someone carries a badge and a gun, they are the law. When a law enforcement officer gives us a command, we are expected to follow that command. He was told to stop and he did not. The ranger must have thought there was no other way to stop him. Better a taser than a .357, .40 cal etc., to stop him.

No mention of the dogs being hurt, probably a little freaked out...

When the man said he was not carrying ID, he should have given his real name and not a false name. Police frown when they are lied too...it brings more suspicion...
