  • I saw this video on youtube that was a complete tearjerker. It was showing statistics of adopted/rescued dogs and what happens to the ones that don't get picked to go home with someone. Then they go on to show someone injecting the dog to put him 'to sleep' and then to make it even worse they show them throwing the dogs away in the garbage can, handling them like if they were a piece of garbage. One man was dragging what looked like a german shepherd by his neck and getting it ready to throw away. These animals do not do harm to anyone and yet they are discarded like if they were nothing at all. They do not have a malicious bone in their bodies and if you look into their eyes all you see is innocence. How can anyone treat these animals like they were a stuffed animal that is old and needs to be thrown away? I found this to be disgusting and I think after the dog has been put to sleep handle him with a lttle more respect, give him some dignity. I don't know what's happening in this world, everyone is so cold and no one cares about anything anymore. Give your dog/cat a hug let them know how much you love them and how important they are to be part of your family. Please, do it for them-they can't speak for themselves. We need to defend them. God made these wonderful creatures for us to take care of not kill!!

we must not be shy about getting the message out to our family and friends about having our pets neutered/spayed so more unwanted pups are not put in our communities. Do not buy these fancy mixed dogs some breeders are selling like labradoodles, etc. When you get a pet, it is for a lifetime, not a disposable item.

Work to shut down puppy mills, never buy from a pet shop, only reputable breeders if you must have a purebred animal.

Find a "used" pet from a shelter.

The whole economy mess is making people part with beloved pets. Those of us who can should adopt to keep these dogs from death or starvation on the streets. And if you can't adopt help support your local shelters.

We have a big bag of old sheets, pillows and towels we are taking to a shelter tomorrow. Everything is appreciated.

And the biggest thing we can do to prevent these deaths is to control the pet population. When someone lets their dog have just one litter, because it's "good for her" or just because she's so sweet and they want to see her have sweet puppies...well it's unthinkable that one of those adorable puppies might meet this fate one day, but it's very possible. For some good dogs things go wrong through no fault of their own, and there just aren't enough homes out there for all of them.

I'm happy to see that there are so many dog lovers out there. It's true it isn't their fault, yet some will have to pay. Spay/neuter your dogs so that there are not millions of dogs a year that meet the fate that I witnessed on that youtube video. I was crying like a baby when I saw how they were treated. Thanks for all the support. For all of us who are awaiting Hurricane Irene, please be careful and stay in tune with the orders for your town. Good luck and God bless us all. With any luck it would be great if she made a right turn and went out to sea. One can hope and pray.

Also: Make a committment to the animal you're bringing home. If it's a puppy or kitten, realise that you'll have it for 10-20 years, depending on breed, etc. Don't get rid of a pet because you didn't think the committment through, or because it becomes inconvenient, or because you failed to train it and it develops problem behaviours as a result.

If it's a dog, it will need to be exercised, trained, socialised - this takes work. Puppies and dogs don't train themselves, and some breeds are quite high energy and won't be happy (or a good pet) if you don't give them plenty of outlets for that energy. Letting it wander around in your yard is often not enough.

Money - food, routine vet care, flea & heartworm preventative and the ability to handle veterinary emergencies is part of being a responsible owner and having a healthy pet.

So is not allowing your pet to reproduce, unless you have a darn good reason and plan to do it right.

It's less of an overpopulation problem than a retention problem. If everyone made a committment to keep their pet as a family member, or took great care and diligence to find it another home if it's tuly not possible to keep it, there wouldn't be such a market for puppies and kittens, and shelters wouldn't be in the killing buusiness.

Of course we are preaching to the choir here, I think almost everyone who visits the pets forum are already responsible and caring owners!

I have a feeling this country will be judged by the way it handles its dogs and old people. At least we do not eat them, like in China.
