Due to travel and long days we're going to need someone to let Lanie and Odie out for 3-4 consecutive afternoons and possibly take them for a short walk. I am going to ask the neighbor girl, who is 17. She is very responsible and loves dogs. She would only need to spend 20-30 minutes with them. How much should I offer to pay her?
i charge $10 for a 1/2 hour walk for the first dog and $5 for each additional assuming they can be walked together, and then offer price breaks like buy 5 walks get one free, ect.
but $10 is to also cover my gas to get to the client...so...
and im insured/bonded.
Not sure where you're located (which has a bearing on the price) but I'd prob. give her $10 for a visit (assuming she lives a short distance from your home), she may spend more time w/ them even though it's not necessary, am sure she'd be thrilled to get paid for doing something she enjoys. Prob. a little less w/b doable but I think I'd round it off as it's just for several days and is for 2 dogs.
honeycrips is definatly right, location will play a part, around my area walks are typically $15 for 1/2 hour, and the state average is $10 per 1/2 hour. i do $10 simply because i choose my clients locally and there often my pet sitting clients as well (customer loyalty).
if you go to care.com youll be able to do a search for pet sitters and dog walkers in your area and get an extimate for your general vicinity, then pay her a little less (as she lives next door and isnt bonded/insured) (which both play a part in average fees for dog walkers/pet sitters )
If she is refilling water, feeding or pilling, then more. If not, then probably pay her whatever care.com PLUS a bit more (good idea on care.com foxywench). Why? She is also checking on your home, making sure it is secure and next time you need her, she'll likely be there for you.
Thanks for the feedback. I offered $10 for each day. She told me she would have done it for free. But I think $10 is fair.
Yesterday two 12-year olds (nice kids, we are friends with the family) asked if they could walk the dogs (for free) just for fun. They actually wanted to play with them, throwing a ball and stuff. I let them walk Lanie around a cul de sac and it went well. Lanie was thrilled to have two walks in one day. So maybe when the 17-year old goes off to college I will have another little dog walker in the neighborhood I can hire!
It really is wonderful to have dog-walkers in the making if the older girl has a conflict etc - local is the way to go if at all possible - wish we had that here (maybe in the new place...). Lucky Lanie (and lucky you).
