I currently live in Georgia, but I want to go to college elsewhere to get out of my comfort zone. I'm thinking about going to Detroit because I have family there and they live 10/15 minutes away from Wayne State. I have a 3.2 GPA and scored a 1330 on the SAT and a 17 on the ACT. What are my chances?

If you have financial means you will probably get in. Last I heard (except for med school) there is not a line to get in.

Being minority increases your chances expodentially. Add 10 points to your profile.

If you graduated from an under-performing URBAN high school you add 2 points to your profile.

Wayne is a pretty good school, but my understnading from omone on these boards is that the requriement to get in is breathing and able to pay.

I am not sure whether that is true. I went there decades ago, it was a decent school then and I had no problem getting accepted to the top tne law schools with a degree from WSU. I do know that the top student or second to top student from our kid's high school went to WSU and we have a very competitive high school. He probably could have gone anywhere.

Wayne State, although a good school, is in the city of Detroit, not a nice or safe area at all. There are plenty of other good public colleges in Michigan. In metro Detroit, you have Oakland University in Rochester. Also, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is only 45 minutes away, but it would be tough to get in with your GPA and test scores. Other schools to check out are Grand Valley State University, Western Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan State, and Central Michigan University.

Wayne is not in a terrible area. Have you ever actually been there? It is not as bad as (for example) the area where USC is located.

It is hard to get into Michigan with a even 3.9 GPA and great test scores. Grand Valley is almost as difficult to get into. I think that you can probably comfortably say that Michigan and Grand Valley are out of the quesiton. However do not get discouraged. I had mediochre grades and test scores coming out of high school. However I woke up and got to work in College and graduated from Wayne with better grades and got a good LSAT score and was admitted to most of the top law schools in the country. All you need to do is get to work.

Wayne is mostly a commuter school. Not that many people live on campus. (A lot more now than when I went there, but still not many). I have no insecurity when I am in the campus area, nor would I have any problem with any of my children attending college there. You do nto want to wander far off campus int he wrong direction, but the campus area and the cultrual disctrict are reasonably nice.

I keep forgetting about Oakland University. They have grown into a full scale college now I think. When I was in school, they were just barely a step above a community college. Now people even live on campus there.

Yeah, what other posters said. My mother and sister went to Wayne, but I sure don't plan on going there myself. My mother's really successful herself, though. But it never even came up as a safety. Even with your grades, you could do better in the state or even the metro area.

Really? Grand Valley is a tough school to get into?

A quick check shows their acceptance rate is 78%, so I wouldn't exactly say that.

i am a faculty member at Wayne State. The area is hardly dangerous. You can feel safe if you choose to come here and you have to compare Wayne State with comparable urban campuses such as Temple, or Cleveland State not suburban oases like U of M. Your education at Wayne State, much like anywhere you may attend school will depend on what you make of it. There are some top notch faculty at Wayne State who love to mentor and help develop bright young minds. Seek these professors out and should you do well at Wayne you wont have a problem getting into a good grad school. Wayne State is a research based institution, (R1) and therefore is much more highly regarded for grad school admissions than a non-research based institution such as Grand Valley State. If you are going to come to Michigan and you do not wish to consider Wayne State then Michigan State would probably be a good bet. I believe that your GPA and test scores will make it hard or near impossible for you to get into MIchgian. One problem with Wayne for someone who is out of state will be the lack of a campus life. While the university has taken great strides to work toward creating more of an on campus life the results have been mixed at best and are hampered by the lack of activity/businesses that operate on a student schedule in the area (this is particularly evident on weekends). Wayne State is still shedding its commuter image. I would also ask you to think about what you plan to major in since Wayne is stronger in some areas than others. We would love to have you here and you should consider applying.
