Besides the occasional drunk, flasher or skirt puller; Downtown Royal Oak is safe at night as long as you stay out of the alleys. Walking around certain neighborhoods in the city at night is questionable, but considering Downtown is usually very populated at night I wouldn't imagine there's a concern of safety.

I live right at 4th/Oakdale...about 3 blocks from Main Street, have been for almost 2 years now. Nightlife is all right there...from 11 down to 6th street, and from the Brewery over to Center Street. Bars for everyone...from the loud/db-ish Woodys and O'tooles, to the relaxed more chill Brewery and Rock on 3rd (2nd favorite), to the dives Gusoline Alley (favorite). I can vouch for Luna - great place to go. Its a mile north of DT Royal Oak right on Main. Sunday nights they have $2 you-call-its, and its actually the place to go on Sundays. Thursdays there is great as well.

There is something every night of the week...Thursday is $2 mug night at O'tooles...Friday/Saturday is 1/2 off everything at Monterreys (including drinks...can you say $10 margarita pitchers?). During football season the Brewery does $2 pints on Mondays. Happy Hours are everywhere.

Coney/Comet/Qdoba/Jimmy Johns all right there for your late night fixing.

Safety? Never had a problem aside from the occasional car alarm going off for hours because the guy across the street went out of town and his Blazer had a branch fall on it. Cops are very quick to jump on anything going bad - they are usually right outside the 'trouble' bars/clubs. I actually have several friends who are RO police and they say that its very quiet, except for the occasional fight or drunk stumbler on a Friday or Saturday night. You have to go east to Hazel Park, south to Detroit, west to Oak Park to find trouble really...and you only find it if you're looking for it. Everyone has their own bad experiences though.

Apartment wise - no big complexes in the Downtown area. There are the Urbane apartments, but they're terribly overpriced for a small space.

Most living rentals are upper or lower flats in houses. I rent a unit in a 6-unit building on a side street. Check Craigslist...you'll find something close! However - if a listing says its 'within walking distance'...check Google Maps. There are several that claim this, and are actually 2 miles away...

Was going to recommend Memphis Smoke, but I see it closed - dang...
If there's anything similar, or a re-opening, please post.

The place that opened up in its place looks interesting too, but I can't remember the name.

Its a Diablos, part of the tex-mex chain. They have one over in Ferndale as well. The one at 11/Main now...I was walking by and I swear there are over 50 gigantic tv's mounted all around the place. Its insane. Its been crazy busy since they opened, so I've heard service is messy as a result.

I was upset when Memphis Smoke left too. Food wasnt that great but you could hear live music 7 nights of the week! Now the only place close to that is Tom's..just a few nights aweek.

They also re-opened the 5th Avenue next to O'tooles recently...

I liked Memphis Smoke as one place for musicians to work. I never went there - just read about it on misc blues sites and magazines. That's why I'm interested in similar venues in Detroit or Michigan anywhere.

Ahh, I love Comet Burger. Haven't been there in years. I should go there soon.

Sorry for nitpicking but Madison Heights is east of Royal Oak, not Hazel Park. You can find plenty of trouble in Madison Heights too.
