I have never been to Detroit before. I currently live in the Youngstown Ohio area. I had to go up that way on Friday to drive my stepfather for an issue he had to take care of. We went to the Greektown Casino. I have never been there before either or any other casino for that matter. Arrived in there around 3:00 pm and it was somewhat busy but by the time we left at 6:30 or 7:00 that place was crazy busy. I thought the economy was terrible in Detroit and most all Michigan. If so why was the Casino so busy? Another thing I was wondering was many of the people in there seemed poor. It looked like many were gambling away their measly paychecks. Do the good people of Detroit think that the casinos are a good or bad thing? Do you feel it takes advantage of the lower economic segments of society? Another thing I noticed were many of the people gambling looked miserable. I thought gambling was supposed to be fun?

Do the good people of Detroit think that the casinos are a good or bad thing? I think casinos are a bad thing. The only reason I can see having them in Detroit is that it is better for people to be robbed...er, "profited from".. here than elsewhere. Do you feel it takes advantage of the lower economic segments of society? Absolutely. Gambling is a tax on the "statistically challenged". Another thing I noticed were many of the people gambling looked miserable. I thought gambling was supposed to be fun? I found it to be quite boring myself. I've never been to any of the Detroit/Windsor casinos, but I've been to ones in other cities and was not impressed with the superficial flashing lights and constant ringing noises (which, by the way, play even if no one is winning.).
And nothing bores me more than people who brag about how much money they won. (Of course, they never mention how much they lost in order to win. )

I just play a couple of the slot machines. Most of the stuff in there I have no idea how to play.

Really wish they would put slot machines where you can use coins. I have a bunch laying around but can't insert them in the machine. I wana have all my coins in a popcorn cup with my winnings.

Yeah, modern slot machines are not fun to play. I liked the old-fashioned slot machines where pulling the lever actually spun the wheels mechanically. At least you felt that you had some possibility of winning if only you pulled the lever the right amount and at the right speed. (Not that I played them a lot.)

Even in Las Vegas there are only a few places with those left.

As for the Detroit casinos, the MGM has a better clientele. The Greektown and the Motor City get a bit seedy at times. I only go to the Greektown for an occasional buffet or to sit on that second story patio overlooking Monroe Street; I don't usually gamble as I end up nearly in tears after I lose $5. I love casinos but don't gamble much. Heck, when I go to Vegas, I seem to spend more time in Wal*Mart than in casinos.

Thanks for the reply's folks. Hope things get better economically for you in the near future. I have a feeling that in 15 to 20 years the upper and central Midwest will have a Renaissance due to water issues in many parts of the USA. Lets hope for the best..

I can't say much for the gaming, but the real benefit the casinos bring are the shows and the five-star restaurants. There's been some really great names headlining at the casinos. When you stack up the quality entertainment Detroit already had, plus what the casinos added, Detroit is really a world-class entertainment destination. I would say that we are around top 5-10 in North America.

You used to be able to play tic tac toe agaisnt a chicken at Greektown, now that would be fun. Slots = Boring IMO. If you want repetitive arm action, pulling weeds is more fun and costs less. Plus the odds of winning are terrible. Blackjack also bores me to death after about half an hour. However I do enjoy Craps when you get a lively table. It is a high energy game and a fun way to interact with people.

I never played Craps. Maybe I'll give that a try next time.
