Sure, housing prices are low. But I wonder if they factored in heating costs and AC for cost of living?

Yes, Des Moines has low priced housing. BUT, those surveys also negelct property taxes which is part of owning a home. Their median priced $150,000 home wouold come with a $3,000 annual tax bill in the Des Moines area. Net effect: Home prices in Des Moines are really about the same as anywhere else.

NOT! After living all over this great nation, I can tell you that Des Moines home prices are much cheaper than many places. The only place I've lived with comparable housing prices was Topeka, Kansas. Even here in Tacoma, Washington, housing is quite a bit more than in Des Moines.
