Looking for suggestions for apartments near (within walking distance preferably) to the 16th Street Mall. I'll be working at two restaurants at the "mall" come mid January and I've had a hard time figuring out places to lease in the area.

I will have a roommate and we hope to be spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $900-1,000 on rent before basic utilities (really $1K is the max I want to be spending, so I hope there are options for that range that are not in bad areas or sub par accommodations). We both have cars, but since we both will be working at the mall it seems like a good idea to find a place close to work and in a nice area/complex (I have heard parking can be a pain downtown).

I'm assuming the social/night life of that area is good for young people (I'm 24 and my roommate is 22), so any help locating a place would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses and help.

FYI, The 16th street Mall has an excellent free shuttle that runs the length of it. It seems that at any time there are about 6 shuttles on the mall which means that your wait will never be more than 3 to 5 minutes for the next shuttle. So, you can avoid the expensive downtown parking hassle and find a lot at the edge of downtown for about $4 per day.
If you're lucky to find an apt. close enough you won't need to drive downtown at all. There are many places to rent. Probably it's a great idea to look through the MANY times this has been posted on this site before for comprehensive answers to your questions.
Good Luck.....
