I once met an Indian guy who commuted BY CAR from Newark (DE) to Manhattan daily. Poor guy looked like he was contemplating suicide.[/quote]

I do admit that the tolls can be a bit much on the NJ Turnpike, but seriously, the commute is not that bad. Honestly, sometimes I take a joyride up the turnpike just because it's so much fun. There's nothing quite like it on the east coast. I haven't braved the mean freeways of LA yet, but some day I will.

Then again, being stuck in stop and go traffic from Brooklyn into Manhattan is kind of unnerving. But, hey, my fellow Western friends, traffic jams can be added to your zen experience of stopping and smelling the roses.

Amtrak operates the Acela Express along the eastern corridor between Boston and Washington DC, which of course includes the NYC/Penn Station-Wilmington DE leg. Between NYC and Wilmington Acela stops briefly in Newark NJ, Metro Park NJ (some but not all of the trains), and Philadelphia. The journey normally takes 90 mins. It is, of course, more expensive than taking a "regional" Amtrak train that makes a lot more stops. However, I always take Acela.

If you are referring to Joe's post above, you would drive to 30th Street station, pay for gas and $25 to park all day, and take one of these buses: http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/09/26...l?pagewanted=2 (broken link)

The one time I did this, but taking the train, it cost me $75 round trip (that includes gas and parking). The buses are cheaper, but you still have to pay for gas and parking.

You can also get a Chinatown bus from the Wilmington Amtrak station (and pay for parking) http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/09/26...l?pagewanted=2 (broken link)

To cut the parking cost you can drive to Cherry Hill, NJ, and catch the Bolt bus from there. www.boltbus.com This will cost you $1-$14 each way, plus the 90 minutes of gas each way to drive to Cherry Hill.

For a number of reasons, I have given up on the Bolt Bus, and now drive 90 minutes to Trenton and get on the NJ Transit train. I think this was about $12 one way, plus $6 to park all day (on a Saturday) + gas.

I don't know where in NCC you live, but for me, no matter how I try to get to New York, it takes me 3.5-4 hours door-to-door. I have done this about 5 times now.

Hope this helps.

^I personally park on one of the first blocks without metered parking, and walk to the Chinatown bus. If somebody wants to steal my car, so be it.

Oh... and 90 mins to Cherry Hill?? It takes me 90 minutes to drive to the tunnels lol. 30 mins to Cherry Hill most probably.

CT is hateful...it is the highway that is never finished being worked on

Those of us that travel from the area to above New Haven/Providence/Boston/New Hampshire (take your pick) on a fairly frequent basis (at least 4-5 times a year) tend to have mapped out 3-4 options for the trip in case of heavy traffic
OR
you can just leave @ 2 in the AM and avoid all that mess - and while paying the top $$$ tolls on the GW, avoid an additional 30 minutes of the parkway, thru-way, Tappan Zee and Westchester Expwy.
By the time you hit Boston, rush hour is starting and the sun is coming up. Who needs sleep??

Oops, I was factoring in the extra time I add in for traffic and to park and get there early for the bus. Mapquest says 60 minutes - just calculate your own personal Mapquest-adjusted driving time from that .

Want to catch the bus from Wilmington, DE Sat. to NYC returning Sun. I'm told there's no parking at the Wilmington stop. Anyone know of public parking nearby?
Thank you.
