I appreciate your honesty Joe84323. Not knowing is one thing. Being mean is another. I want to feel comfortable where I move and not be ridiculed because of being a different faith. This is my last time on this message board, as we are leaving for Delaware tomorrow. Lots to do to get ready

After having visited Delaware last week, I found out that it is probably worse for people to know that someone is from New York than that they are Jewish. I don't think I'll be able to hide the New York thing. It will be obvious as soon as I open my mouth. I'm not worried.

I'm clearly a New Yawker and I've never had a moment of difficulty with anyone in any of my trips within Delaware. I've always found that you get what you give and if you're nice to people, they're going to be nice to you. I cannot imagine you having a problem.

Charley

Hi Charley-I don't foresee a problem. Just passing on info I got when I visited. I found everyone to be very pleasant and polite. I appreciate that and display the same.

Why would you think a person from NY would have a problem???

I understand where Movn2del is coming from, and she has her ear to the ground. As a local, I know other locals who are quite bitter about newcomers, not only New Yorkers, but those from other states. Their feelings are revealed, mostly when they are in the company of other locals. The bitterness I hear is how rude, arrogant and unfriendly those from elsewhere are, and how they have come in droves to retire here, yet complain about the population explosion. My Amish friends are extremely wary of out-of-staters, but, many years ago they were wary of the "English locals". I've met some pretty obnoxious newcomers, but then, I know some pretty obnoxious locals, also. If you'll notice, for the most part, transplants seem to "hang" with transplants, and the same with locals. The forums I visit are comprised of newcomers who've become friendly with one another....I'm the only local on one of those. My neighbor's take on this is....put "them" all in 55+ communities so "they" can be together. And, that appears to be what's happening. There are few locals buying in to those types of communities. I know one local lady in Barclay Farms, and the other 200 or so are not from Delaware. She has her house up for sale, and tells me her neighbors are "just different". People are the same everywhere, in my opinion, and my profession involves meeting all types of people, every single day, from every part of the country. We are like a box of crayons.......all colors, all sizes, some worn and frayed, some new, some old, some pretty, some not-so-pretty, but we all must live together in the same box.

I never gave it it athought as whether or not people would like us because we are from out of state. I guess I have the people are people mentality and I dont' like any predjudice. Predjudice is really a form of stupidity.
You are correct Delly, we have one person that is a true delawarian, the rest transplants.
I can only speak for the 55+ communities, De has the best communities for the best price. At least in the north east anyway. I'm sure there are other states that are more affordable but the location wouldn't suite me. We thought this through and through.
I do find People in De more friendly than back in PA
Another reason we chose a 55+ is because we relate to people our own age. Have more in common.
As far as the locals not liking the fact that DE is a transplant growing state, I say isn't that too bad. Guess they will have to learn to deal with it or move.

Just take a look at little DE, if this sort of thing is happening here no wonder we can't have world peace. Look at the jews and Palestinians for instance. Now they should just put away their bomb belts, guns and hate and just learn to live together.

I don't think that being from New York will pose a problem. Someone I spoke with, in Delaware, mentioned that IF we would have ANY problem, it would be more about that we are from New York than that we are Jewish. Everyone we met in Delaware was very accepting and terrific. I can't wait for our move. We are trying to assimilate into Delaware. We like Delaware the way it is. We are leaving New York to leave New York, along with some peoples attitudes, behind. We are friendly people who enjoy waving to others as they pass and saying good morning or good afternoon and having the same done for us. We treat people the way we want them to treat us. Funny you mention about the out-of-state people moving into the developments. We thought about it and actually looked at some of them. The end result is that our first choice was a resale, not in a development. So.......please hope and pray for us that it works out. If not, we will have to come back in a few months and try again.
