I'm currently living in Newark, DE, but have always wanted to live by the ocean. I also love living in a walkable place, especially where there's an older downtown area. As an example, I've lived a block from the waterfront in Canton, MD, and loved it. Smaller than the Baltimore area is fine, of course, I just like being able to walk to places. I don't have any timetable for needing to move but have been looking at Craigslist and Hotpads as well as the online classifieds for the shore area, searching for a rental home (not apartment) and there's next to nothing! Is there a secret to locating listings for Lewes, Rehoboth, etc., or am I looking in the right places? If I drive to those areas and drive around will I have better luck, maybe checking for rental signs with phone numbers? is there a local version of the Pennysaver that I can only pick up locally? Am I not seeing rentals because it's becoming beach season and those with rentals are doing vacation type rentals? I'd appreciate any insight and new places to search for rentals. I might want to buy a place later, but want to rent in an area first, to find out how I really like it.
I've been thinking Lewes and Rehoboth are closest to what I'm looking for, but would appreciate other suggestions, too, for a retirement friendly location.

Thanks, nuts2uiam for the link to the MLS. I couldn't find rentals, but it did give me an idea of housing costs in different neighborhoods. It looks like I'd have to be making a hefty income to buy anything in Lewes, once I decide to buy. Rehoboth prices look a little more possible.

Not sure of the budget but there are some reasonable areas in Lewes, you just have to visit and look.

My brother just went through this. Craigslist has the most listings. It takes a lot of time to sort out the ones that are legit, but most of the good ones just aren't listed anywhere else. Also check The Cape Gazette, the local paper that comes out Tuesdays and Fridays. You can see the rental listings, such as they are, by clicking on the Classified link from the main page.

My brother did find a place he's happy with. He actually found it by checking all the local realtors' web sites and drilling down to long-term rentals.
