Hello forum members. I am adding to the many posts on relocation guidance.

Our family is planning on relocating this summer from Georgia to the NJ/DE/PA area. Wife has a easily transferable job, husband is down to accepting one of two positions, one in Wilmington the other in the Cherry Hill NJ area. The Wilmington position is desirable professionally, the NJ position is desirable for proximity to family (the reason we are moving). At least Wilmington puts us within 1-2 hours of family instead of 8-10.

Right now it is looking like Wilmington will win. This is our first move with children which is obviously much more difficult since we have to commit to a neighborhood/area to avoid multiple school transitions. It looks like most people opt for private school if they live in Wilmington or move to PA for good public schools? How about living in NJ and commuting to Wilmington?

Our approach to education tends to be non-traditional but are considering transitioning to public school as the kids get older. What are the desirable public school districts? Anyone have personal insight into Wilmington Montessori or Wilmington Friends?

Thanks in advance!

When are you moving? Summer 2012
Where are you coming from? Georgia
Why are you moving? To be closer to family
Where will you be working? Wilmington (husband), telecommute/Philadelphia (wife)
Have you been here yet? No (planning on visiting in April)

Will you buy or rent? Buy (may rent for first year)
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend? House. $650k-$750k
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend?
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up?

Are you married or single? Do you have children? Married, 2 children (one elementary age, one middle school age)
Do you prefer public or private schools? Currently in private but would like to consider public.
Do you have pets? No
Do you want or need a yard? Yes
Are you keeping a car? Yes
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? In between

What do you want to be closest to? Work and school

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? Diverse neighborhood

I am fairly new to the Wilmington area, but what about Greenville? It is a nice upscale area that is close to some private schools.

You could live in Gloucester Co if you want the NJ public schools. It would be about 20 minutes to Wilmington.

You could live in North Wilmington (burbs) and send your kids to private school.

People commute from all over the southern half of Jersey and SE PA to Wilmington. Wilmington is very accessible to both (I95, 202,I295.)

Although I can't see where your family lives where Cherry Hill would be that much closer - they're at most a half an hour apart whether you take 295 or the turnpike.

Default Chadds ford

Hi! Did you ever settle on a place? My family just found out that we are moving abroad for a year or 2. We live in an area called Chadds Ford, which is right between Wilmington (15-20 minute drive) and Philadelphia (30 minutes away). The schools are wonderful (which is why we moved here in the first place) and we are trying to find a renter for the next year or so. The neighborhood we live in has 120 houses, is new construction, and there are over 200 younger kids. We have 5 bedrooms and about 5k sq feet. If you have any interest, I can provide further details about the house. Have a nice day!
