Only 7-8 % voters showed up ... But they made a good choice. Now it is up to Kovach to justify that it was a wise choice ...he has little more than 18 months to prove it. I hope he is a quick learner ...in any case he can understand technical, legislative work much better than Mr. Sheldon who kept on talking about imaginary conflict of interest that Kovach had and nothing about how he is better suited to be Council President after being on the Council for six years....

I'm afraid I don't have much trust in the NCCoC when it comes to development issues. That includes Bob Weiner, the only Republican for whom I voted in the last general election, because of his prominence in opposing the Stoltz insatiable land development machine. However, Weiner as well as Chris Coons were involved in drafting county legislation that let the developers have the opportunity to run wild in the first place. I was happy to vote for Chris Coons for US Senate but not very happy with what I knew of his work on Council. As to Kovach, I voted for him because he was more credible in terms of opposing runaway development, but if he f's it up I'll be voting for his opposition next time around and frankly I won't be all that surprised if things turn out like that.

He will be concentrating on his re-election meaning mostly anti-development issues ... he gets to arrange the agenda and prioritize. It may be that he has to succumb to some tax hike if all the cuts in spending are not possible - thanks to the majority of Democratic councilmen - by the way I am not really for Republican candidates but felt that compared to Sheldon, Kovach was much better qualified to run the Council and be able to visualize future problems way before they arise.

Low voter turn out was interesting. Glad with the outcome. Let's hope for positive things to come of it.

Low voter turnout was pathetic but I doubt that even with superb weather it would have been all that much higher -- maybe 10% rather than the actual 7%. Most people don't care about a race like that, and indeed there was only one issue that engaged me and probably most of the electorate who bothered to vote.

Unfortunately, in our democracy the electorate is quite oblivious to how the system works. e.g to get things done ..it was important to have a filibuster proof U. S. senate especially when Republicans are simply being obstinate ...a sane solution would have been to elect two more non republican senators to make those disciplined but obstinate republicans ineffective --but the electorate goes for a CHANGE by defeating a moderate democrat like Feingold and now we are all stuck with gridlock for two years about which the electorate will be unhappy,(GO FIGURE) and it is their own undoing.

The County Council President is a very important councilman position because it is voted by the entire body of the electorate - just like the Executive - rather than the individual district votes So it is a SUPER councilman position and has a lot pf power that goes with it. But because it is a lone position on the ballot people are careless, lazy, ignorant (pick one) and only 7-8% show up ...fortunately, enough awake northern NCCo voters - (anti-Stoltz) showed up to counter the Union vote (please note, I am not against Unions) and we ended up with a more decent County Council President, by chance. If 5000 more union voters had come out we would have a great democratic team to have unrestricted development and people would have complained (even though it is their own (in)action) about that too ..... such is the democracy with no ownership of responsibilty, we practice.
