When I lived in Dallas I used to love this occasional crazy cold fronts! It used to shock me every single time. But you can't really complain given the fact the Dallas gets so many beautiful, sunny days in winter with high temps in 60s or low 70s-

Andy -

Agreed! The cold snaps are the price to be paid for the really nice warm winter days we get as well. Two days before Christmas, I mowed the lawn (ok, just mulched the leaves) in my t-shirt cause it was 70 degrees. I love those freak warm days. Gives you a really nice break from winter.

I think us newbies to Dallas were lured here with those stories, but we haven't had but ONE freak warm day. The rest of the winter has been way cold. Bring on the warm spell!!

I was totally upsold at the Autozone tonight when I went to buy an ice scraper. He sold me some de-icer spray and told me some fuel injector cleaner/ gas treatment will help prevent the gas from freezing. I hope he's right! Luckily, I have one car in the garage and only one is outside.

Anyone else have any other tips?

I don't think you'll have problems. I'm from Pittsburgh and never was used to parking in a garage, even in the coldest winter days. To date I've never had a fuel-line freeze. The only thing you should prepare for is the few minutes extra you'll need to let your car warm up before driving it.

ice scraper? Seriously? You wasted your money. Plus gasoline doesnt freeze. How do you think people start their cars up north?

I have an ice scraper and it has come in handy. If there is ever sleet or freezing rain there will be a use for it, even if you only need it once a year. The gasoline treatment definitely was not needed.

I had ice on my windshield this morning. After about 2-3 minutes of the defrost on it was pretty much gone with the windshield wipers and the washer fluid. You know if you spray the blue washer fluid on the windshield it melts the ice right? And I didnt have to scrape anything.

Yes, I am well aware of that. There have been plenty of times where the sleet or freezing rain has caused the windshield wipers to be frozen and unable to move, so using wiper fluid was pointless and/or didn't work. Today's ice was extremely light and really no problem.
