I used to live right next to an active train track and after a month or so I didn't even notice it. At first though it woke me up every night. I lived there 3 years.

Last spring I was over at Firewheel and there was a really long train stopped on the tracks along 190. The entire train was flatbeds with military jeeps. My best guess is it was heading down to Ft. Hood

DARTlight rail has taken over some tracks that were fairly active. There are some tracks near Plano Parkway and 75 that used to have trains that seemed to be mile long pass by.

This.

When I lived in Germany as a student, my room was directly across the street from a passenger train track. Unlike in the US, that meant there were trains going by every 10 or 20 minutes. After a few weeks, I completely blocked out the noise and slept right through it.

It served me well when, a few years later, I scored a screaming deal on a starter house because it was a block from a freight track. Train noise? Lowered price? Where do I sign?

Later I bought a house right under the main approach to a major airport - every 100 seconds you got another plane. Same deal - great discount for something that I had learned to block out.

Look at it this way - you're getting the unusual opportunity to gain a life-long skill. It's a feature, not a defect!

Mom - One small correction. Collin County isn't trying to get a rail port (or intermodal yard). Jerry Hoagland is trying to get re-elected and came up with that to woo voters in the district he has completely neglected in recent years. He claims it will bring jobs to the region. In *30* years.

I remember a family getting killed at the one at Naaman School and 78. But the father survived and mom and children died. A friend lived down the street and said that he dad's behavior afterwards was very weird. And not long after he had a mail order bride there.

Default Seriously thinking about moving out of my house due to th train whistle in sachse

I agree with PJ Sleepy. The train whistle at 10pm, 2 am, 4 am and 5 or 5:30 am. It it horrible. It woke me up about 2 hours ago and I cann't go back to sleep. I moved in my house about 4 yrs ago. I still can't get used to the whistle. I have one year old twins and the train whistle wakes them up at least twice a night. For the sake of my children, I have been thinking about moving out. So PJ you are not alone.

Thanks Luleo! I'm going to e-mail the City of Wylie engineering department and see when it is expected they will have the quiet zones in place. I suggest you do the same. The last info I could find on the City of Wylie website was from September and it says "Crossing upgrade work should begin later this year, with all quiet zones, except for the FM 1378 crossing to be operational by Spring 2010." In other words, they should be working on it now, so I'd like an update!

I will make sure to send out my e-mail as well. I have been thinking about going around door to door in my block to have folks sign a petition and mailing a written request to the City of Sachse as well. I will post my status sometime soon.

Just a heads up. It took the City of Murphy like 3 years to actually get the Quiet Zones implemented. Not thru lack of trying but because the RR is like the slowest entity on the planet to deal with. They move at their own pace and seem to be accountable to no one.
