Hello everyone,

Could any of you please give me information regarding Skillman Street, such as, which area is safe to live??

Specifically, how is the area around Skillman between Walnut Hill and Royal Lane? Or should I look a little more south on Skillman for a place to rent? if so, how much farther south?

My budget is $750-$800 .... if anyone has any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them!

Thanks so much in advance!

Skillman south of Northwest Highway (Loop 12). See thread on The Village Apts -- also look around University -- however some of those are slated to be demolished and redeveloped (some already have temporary fences up - but not all), so be sure to ask.

I think anything from the Villages south is okay. North of the Villages is not so great and you certainly don't won't anything on the other side of Northwest Hwy.

Northwest Hwy is a MAJOR divider. To the immediate south, the Village with the occasional property crime. To the immediate north, shootings are not infrequent.

Don't forget drugs and assorted robbery. On the upside, they're tearing apart a lot of the troubled apartments.

It is their own fault. They put them next to a pawn shop, and put that next to a liquor store. It's a crime factory.

Getting an apartment north of NW Hwy is getting more and more difficult right now. Both sides of Walnut Hill are being torn down for the Lake Highlands Town center. I've heard the complex just north of the complex currently being town down at Walnut Hill (sorry, don't know the name) is a safe property. South of the LHTC property, there is one apartment complex, then a condo, then two more apartment complexes - but these last two complexes before the trail system were just bought by the same developer as the LHTC... so, as I've said it's getting tougher and tougher to get into an apartment in the area. Supposedly, at the SW corner of Royal Lane and Skillman, another developer is buying 3 more complexes to tear down and redevelop.

I don't know what they rent for, but there are two streets immediately North of the Walnut Hill/Skillman intersection, just north of the shopping center with LA Fitness that has duplexes that are rented. It's on the West side of Skillman and is part of the Merriman Park North neighborhood - if you're looking for a yard at all, this might be a good option. It would be walking distance to the new town center when it starts to open next year, and certainly walking distance to LA Fitness, Mi Cocina, etc in the shopping center at the corner.
