Which companies provide cable service to the northern Dallas suburbs, particularly, McKinney, Frisco, and Plano? Here in Minnesota we have Comcast and I am trying to figure out if we should start changing our Comcast email accounts before we move to the Dallas area in April or if we will be able to keep them.

Thanks!

Hi Jane,

I just moved from Minnesota to Dallas a couple of months ago. Welcome, you will love it here! By cable I am assuming you meant Internet. I live in Plano and have the option of going with either Time Warner or Verizon FiOS. I went with Time Warner initially because I wasn't interested in bundled offers. Time Warner was much cheaper for internet only. But there is a reason why they are cheap. I work from home and had so many issues with fickle speed that I switched to be Verizon yesterday. The difference is significant. Time Warner's service made comcast look awesome Verizon now has a promotion going on for month to month contracts and I got Internet only for 40 a month. If the home you pick is wired for FiOS, I'd definitely go with Verizon. Hope that helps.

I just went with Time Warner in our Plano apartment, but not happily. I've just finished a major telephony project with my company that involved hundreds of internet installs in Texas, and Time Warner was bottom of the barrel for quality output (much worse than the Comcast service I'm leaving as I relocate to Texas). Verizon FIOS for sure for quality quality, although they are pricier.

I'd have gone for Verizon FIOS, but for some reason they don't deliver to my apartment. It's very weird...they deliver to the building and even to other apartments on my floor...but not to mine. This may be an issue that I'll have to stand right at the desk in front of someone to work out. It wasn't working out on the phone.

We gave thumbs down on ATT and Charter as well.

ATT: The brand name is big, but ATT has bought out many of the small local companies and often hasn't updated or level-set the technology. They just put their name on it, so it's the same old stuff except the president of the company is no longer the local guy in the back of the office.

Verizon Fios is the best among ones available in DFW.

Verizon FIOS is only available on certain blocks - so if you want them, be sure you check the availability of your specific location first. Generally, Verizon and AT&T cable/internet don't compete - if your block has AT&T, FIOS won't build out there.

Other than them, TimeWarner, Comcast, AT&T, Dish, and DirectTV are the alternative providers.

IMO, AT&T and DirectTV are miles ahead of the others in terms of tv service, but FiOS is much better than the rest for internet service. FIOS TV product (IMO) is pretty weak, the user interface on the DVR is horrible and filled with intrusive ads, and the price is high if you don't continually negotiate better tv packages.

After using FiOS for just 2months agree with @TheOverdog that their DVR is slow/horrible/filled with ads.
