My husband has been interviewing in Irving, TX. What would be a good suburb in a 30-40 mi commuting distance. We have middle school and elementary age children. We have a boat and would like to reside near a lake also.

Any suggestions on a great suburn, neighborhood and/or schools would be greatly appreciate!!

What's your budget? Grapevine might be what you're looking for. Near the lake, good schools, some entertainment/nightlife/restaurants, lots of festivals. And now that construction has finished on the freeways around there, commuting is not as much of a nightmare as it has been.

Based on your criteria, I would second Grapevine. Lake Grapevine isn't the biggest around, but is ringed by parks, marinas and even a mega-resort. Downtown Grapevine is quaint with shops bars & restaurants. You'd be nearly adjacent to DFW airport, which could be a blessing or a curse! Plus, the much larger Lewisville Lake is not very far to the north (20-30 minutes maybe) as a second option for your boat.

Add Coppell and Flower Mound to your list. All are within 30-40 minutes of Irving and 10 min or less to Lake Grapevine. All have excellent schools. All are very family friendly. It's really a matter of budget and personal preference (Coppell is going to be the most expensive of the 3)

Thanks for your replies, We were hoping to stay in the $350k range for a home, something a little newer with young families. I have not looked at Coppell and Flower Mound, I will check those areas out now. We currently live in a suburb of Minneapolis and it's considered quite out in the country. I like the best of both worlds, out of the city yet in a small town and close enough to activities.

Would any of you know what the best elementary school and middle school would be in grapevine? Would that determine where we should look to buy our home? Neither of my kids are big into sports (yet) so that is not a determination.

The best area of Grapevine is the south part near Parr Park, and the part between 360 and 121. I know the latter feeds into Grapevine Elementary, but I'm not sure of the middle school. Unfortunately, this is the farthest away from the Lake, but it's still only 10-15 minutes' drive. In your budget, you will find many nice homes to choose from.

My husband and I have lived in Grapevine for 12 years, and we love it here!

FYI: Coppell has very high property taxes. On a $250k house, their taxes are about $2k more annually than in Grapevine!

Thanks ChristieP that is good to know I'm starting to feel quite upbeat at the prospect of moving to TX. 10 -15 min drive to the lake is no problem. Do you know if there is a Lifetime Fitness in Grapevine? I'm going to research that school and area now...I'm so thankful I found this forum!!

Other areas around Irving to consider may include Southlake and Westlake. They are perhaps a little more upscale and suburban. Our relatives have lived in Grapevine for many years and really enjoyed it. We enjoy participating in the Grapevine Triathlon. Welcome to Texas. A friend of ours chose to live in Coppell because of the low crime rate.

There's a Lifetime Fitness in Colleyville which is right near Grapevine.
