Nice thing about having the data is that one could (if they wanted) assign whatever weights they wanted and come up with their own rankings.

Personally, I prefer to rank schools on results rather than effort. The above rankings are based on the number of kids that actually take an AP exam, compared to the number of kids that actually do well on the exams. People that think that either of the DISD schools are the best in the country are fooling themselves. Nonetheless, they are good schools and applaud the district with their efforts. I suspect that in 10-20 years they could really be powerhouse schools.

One thing got me curious; if I'm reading this correctly, Highland Park was ranked 102 nationally and 17th in the state rankings...17th!!!?!?!? Really??? I'm curious to know the other 16 schools in the state of Texas that beat HP.

I would assume other prep and magnet schools. 5 are listed ahead of HP just in the Dallas area.

Yes, that's one of my big issues with the rating systems of both publications - IIRC, they give a fairly heavy weight to AP/AICE/etc. tests TAKEN relative to size of student body, moreso than the actual results. That's like focusing on the fact that 90% of the student body took, say, the SAT, and downplaying the fact that the average score was 900 (V+M). That's likely an even larger issue with these ratings as AP testing can vary considerably by school and region, even among top flight schools. By contrast, the SAT/ACT are taken by the vast majority of students at the "best" schools.

I think "participation rate" should be taken into account, but results should be given far more weight. Which means...well, like anyone else, glance at the rankings, but then focus on the data.

And has been discussed on this forum countless times, the best publics schools can select by ability (magnets and such, such as TAG), the best open publics effectively select by demographics (they're located in very affluent areas, such as HPHS), and the very best privates tend to effectively "select" with both criteria (high level privates select on ability AND are quite expensive; even though they will have "financial aid" packages the fight for those is VERY intense. Some of the board regulars with far more experience in this arena [such as you, HockDad, you know FAR more on this than I ever will] can correct or clarify that issue if my understanding is incorrect).

I disagree with this one. It's not the school that is selective, its the market. Houses in such area are expensive BECAUSE of the school of how good the schools are, not the other way around.
