We have a car that still has Michigan plates. I want to wait until my registration expires before I switch them over. But they wont let me get a Texas drivers license without switching my plates first. Why is that? I cant get my plates switched because I may fail the inspection because I use a tool to push my gear stick button down in order to switch gears(my button sticks) and it costs $700 to get it fixed and I dont have it right now.

Hello;

This is a new one on me, I knew that you have 30 days to get
a drivers license updated to a Texas drivers license and update your residence.
But the drivers license affecting your license plates???
You may want to verify by calling the DPS down in Austin directly.

Get your vehicle fix and get legal while driving in Texas.

In Texas you have to get the license plates *before* you can get the driver's license...it's just the way they roll here. I wasn't even able to register my kids for school without a valid TX license so that meant turning in my yet-to-expire GA plates.

I forget how long you have (90 days?? Bueller?) before you need to have your Texas plates and driver's license once you move here.

HPISD...They are very strict. Also had to give them a copy of my closing statement on the purchase of our home. A utility bill or two in our name with the current address was just not going to cut it for them.

$700 to fix a gear shift sounds outrageous. Check around with some independent garages for a better deal.
