Autozone will read the codes for free, most codes you can find online, both with what they mean and an explanation of that, in addition there's plenty of automotive forums where you can get help analyzing the codes that pop up etc.

example: A knock sensor code doesn't necessarily mean you have engine knock, it could be that the MAF and IACV needs cleaning, even if those codes haven't come up.

Tell your friend to get the codes read and post them in the Automotive section of this forum, together with info on the car.

If it runs as it always have though, then it sounds more like the sensor is out, not anything mechanically.

Good point on the MAF. That happened to me before a couple of times. There could also be a vacuum leak.

If the CEL is still on, there is a reason for that. It can be fixed; I just think your friend needs to find a new mechanic and hop on google for a minute instead of opening the wallet to a vulture.

Bring it to Hunt County......There's no emissions testing here.

Can you do that? I thought if I moved to Dallas, I'd have to leave my present address on my driver's license so I could get my car inspected here since it wouldn't pass emissions. Can I get it inspected here anyway and not have to worry about emissions even if I have a Dallas address on my driver's license?

There are a few places with bars on the windows in South Dallas/South Oak Cliff that will let you pass your inspection for a "tip" if it fails. Go around Ledbetter/Kiest/Ann Arbor area off 35e. A little extra cash goes a long way down there

BTW: My former state did away with emissions because they realized it was a scam and a way for mechanics/garages and the state to make a lot of money for no reason (we need to tackle the chopping of the rainforest if we are to solve global warming, not check my fully functioning 3 year old car).

I believe that it is where your car is registered that dictates if you need emissions testing or not.

Yeah, I looked it up and that's what it said. And I think you have to register it according to the address on your license. Also, if I understood it correctly, it said the police can set up machines on the side of the road that detect your emissions as you drive by in order to force people commuting from non-emissions counties to get their cars tested. That seems completely ridiculous to me. How do they even know if you're commuting or just visiting? I wish they'd just do away with all that crap. If they want to reduce emissions, they should improve the public transit system.

I fixed a problem this way myself once. Autozone read the code for me and I posted it to the Saturn fan boards. Someone told me to check the spark plug wires, and sure enough one of them was broken. CarMax had broken the wire when I took it there to get a quote on selling it, they just pushed it back into the boot and the CEL came on shortly afterwards.

Autozone no longer does this. You can either pay $65 for a mechanic to do it (ripoff) or buy the reader yourself (~$200)
