Hi, I have been living here for over a year, but never been to the Arboretum. Can any of you who have been there tell me if it's really worth it? Also, when would be the best time in the year to visit?

It is absolutely worth visiting - in fact I would recommend getting a membership so you can go any time of the year. Here is a thread I posted with some photos:

Spring is probably the best time, during Dallas Blooms, but they plant new things throughout the year - so there is always something to see.

Dallas Blooms is gorgeous! The irises and tulips are gorgeous early in the spring, and the azaleas, which are HUGE, are gorgeous later. I have not done the fall activities, but I'm sure they are awesome, too.

Definitely worth it! I'm actually a fan of the fall displays too. Totally worth going AT LEAST once each spring and each fall (And much more frequently if you live close by...great place to get a membership, like Triumph said. Pays for itself quickly.)

I went in the spring and got lost there all day. It was amazingly beautiful. I've been to the Brooklyn Arboretum as well and it was on the same level! Lots to enjoy.

Do they decorate for Christmas? Do anything special?

Here is the page for their holiday theme this year - The Magic of Santa (http://dallasarboretum.org/special_events/MagicOfSanta.htm - broken link). They will be decorating at least one of the exhibit houses (DeGolyer) - I don't know how much (if any) lighting they will be putting up, but I know they will have Christmas-themed plantings put down soon now that Thanksgiving is over.

The Arboretum also has a Holiday Tea @ the Degoyler House twice daily between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Check the website for details as reservations are a must. It's pricey ($40 or so), but the food is good and the price includes Arboretum parking and admission. You can stroll through the gardens before or afterwards. There are some Christmas decorations up and the Arboretum is fairly quiet and peaceful this time of year.

The pumpkin patch is my favorite event- in October. They make these huge installations out of pumpkins.

Thanks all for responding, I went there today and it was really good . The pumpkin patch is still there (although it will be removed soon I think).

Yeah! Glad you went! We have lived here 3 years and just went this fall for the first time. Can't wait for a spring picnic visit!
