I just left my job, and I'm moving away in two weeks.

I'm trying to get temporary work, but should that not happen (which is pretty likely), I need some reason to get out of bed before noon and not smoke all day.

Any suggestions, links, etc.? Thanks

p.s. I can teach math but I'm assuming that's not an option since school just ended

Food banks like North Texas Food Bank are in need of volunteers due to the severe uptick in need from the recession.

Habitat for Humanity is always building something or needing volunteers to help with sorting materials in their warehouse.

Most other volunteer work requires training, which two weeks does not leave much time for.

Kudos to you for wanting to make a difference in the community vs watching Oprah reruns!!

Help out at an animal shelter. Walk the dogs, play with dogs/cats, muck out cages, etc.

I was surprised at how long it takes to actually get into any volunteer program. It takes them over a week to process an application and do a background check for most of them. This is something that can be done in one day since I process leases very often, yet it takes the bureaucracy over a week. You also have to go through that same process in every place you volunteer at.

I hope they shortened the turn arount time but this was about a year ago when I had a friend apply.

There are many websites where you can seek Volunteer opportunities (typically within a date-range that works for you).

Google "volunteer in dallas" and you will get many options.

Two other reliable websites are
1. The state website: Texas.gov | The Official Website of the State of Texas (and enter "volunteer" in the search box)
2. The federal website: Welcome to Serve.gov

And Naima is right - the process to get into volunteer programs is usually painfully long.

Best wishes.

Yeah, I found this one place that does tutoring for GED students, and they have an "application" form, which includes SSN, marital status, and number of children. OK, what am I missing here? I'm not giving you all this personal information and free labor -- pick one!
