Well they didn't know that and what if the employees did nothing and it turned out badly? Spouses have been known to kill kids to get back at the other spouse.
In the article Home Depot reversed their decision after reviewing the case but the guy didn't want his job back. He also had another incident on his record that may have contributed to the original call to fire him.

What if the man in the parking lot was taking his child from his wife who was too stoned or drunk to drive or was abusive to the kid? The wife could have been the "bad person" in the incident.
Once the police dispatcher told him to follow the supposed kidnapper, the decision was out of his hands and he did the right thing. If he'd decided to restrain or tackle the husband in the parking lot instead of calling the police, the situation would be different.
