Hi all,

I have posted before about moving to various NYC metro areas but we have never been able to make the jump for one reason or another.

Now we are considering Darien, Westport, and Wilton, CT for two main reasons: their proximity to the city (I will be commuting to the Bronx and my husband to Manhattan) and because the stellar school systems.

One hurdle I am finding is childcare. What are working folks using to piece together full day childcare in these towns?

My older son will be in Kindergarten so we are set there but I need to find a childcare option for my younger son (4 yrs old) from 8am-5pm. In NYC he would be considered to be in Pre-K but I am finding that in these particular towns Pre-K is for 5 year olds who are not quite ready for Kindergarten. Most Nursery programs seem to be half day (I've looked at churches, the Y) and I would prefer a more school-based setting for him as that is the structure he is currently in. Any options/ideas that are not inordinately expensive? (I realize we are looking in expensive areas but...)

It depends on what you consider inordinately expensive. If I worked full time, I'd love to send our daughter to The Montessori School in Wilton, The Montessori School. It looks like you could do a primary full day + the extended day, which would get you from as early as 7:45 a.m. to as late as 6:00 p.m. for under $25,000. It looks like a really awesome place to go to school, too.

I don't even live in Fairfield County and all the FULL DAY options here for 3 or 4 year old in a School setting and NOT a daycare are pretty expensive...

You may end up having to use a daycare.

People in those towns frequently hire someone to watch their children in their homes.

Correct. Au-pair's are the rule, rather than the exception, in those towns. It's also difficult to find a "reasonable" school in lower FFC. Maybe there's something in the cities(Norwalk/Stamford) like a tutor time/kindercare type of facility that isn't so exclu$ive.

Anecdote:
I was subbing one day in Ffld/Southport side, this 2nd grader wouldn't come to the reading table, 'cause all she wanted to do was get sent home so her Au-pair would take her out on her horse. Now I had to explain to her that subs talk to teachers and principles, and that principles call parents at work ~ not just the Au-pair. Did she really want Mommy or Daddy called just because she didn't feel like joining the bluebirds at the table???? Long story short, she read her book happily.

But yes, lots of Au-pairs and live in nannies down there.

There are so many options in Darien. If you want a full day most schools accomodate that now by having the kids attend back to back sessions. Also, something no one else mentioned is the Darien YMCA.They have a fantastic program.None of this is cheap however.
Oh wait,I also know of a new place on the Darien border called Building Blocks run by some great people. If you go to my blog www.thegoldcoaststandard.com,I have written an article about nursery schools with costs included.Hope it helps
